Cardiovascular System HCS 1080 Mr. Reed Fall 2011
Cardiovascular System Basics • The main components of the human cardiovascular system are the heart and blood vessels. • Includes: the pulmonary circulation, a "loop" through the lungs where blood is oxygenated; and the systemic circulation, a "loop" through the rest of the body to provide oxygenated blood. • Also, the digestive system works with the circulatory system to provide the nutrients the system needs to keep the heart pumping.
Pulmonary Circuit • Oxygen depleted blood is pumped away from the heart • Returns from the lungs oxygenated.
Systemic Circuit • Systemic circulation is the portion of the cardiovascular system which transports oxygenated blood away from the heart, to the rest of the body, and returns oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart. • Systemic circulation is, distance-wise, much longer than pulmonary circulation, transporting blood to every part of the body
The Heart • The heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs • In the human heart there is one atrium and one ventricle for each circulation, and with both a systemic and a pulmonary circulation there are four chambers in total: left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium and right ventricle
Closed System • The Cardiovascular System is closed – meaning our blood does not enter/exit the system. • 4.7 – 5.7 l of blood in our body.
Cardiovascular Disease • Cardiovascular disease is caused by disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and includes coronary heart disease (heart attacks), cerebrovascular disease (stroke), raised blood pressure (hypertension), peripheral artery disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease and heart failure. • The major causes of cardiovascular disease are tobacco use, physical inactivity, and an unhealthy diet • Behavioural risks account for approximately 80% of all cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular Assignment • Assignment • PF 15 – You and a partner will create a poster using Microsoft Powerpoint displaying the negative affects smoking has on the cardiovascular system. • No words, simply pictures • PF 25 – Individually, you will research and present to the class a 5 minute presentation on a cardiovascular disease of your choice • PF 35 – Design and present a fitness plan to promote a healthy heart. • The fitness plan must be comprehensive including all three leading causes of cd – physical inactivity, tobacco use, and diet.
