  1. Using the hype cycle and horizon report to guide technology adoption Trent Grundmeyer PhD.

  2. Objectives • Understand the premise of the Horizon Report and Gartner’s Hype Cycle. • Understand how the Horizon Report and Gartner’s Hype Cycle can be used to plan for effective technology adoption.

  3. When Alice in Wonderland was trying to decide which way to go during her travels, she asked the Cheshire Cat,

  4. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

  5. "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

  6. "I don't much care where," said Alice.

  7. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.

  8. If you don’t care where you are going, then it really doesn't’t matter which choice you make. However, if you do care where you are going and if you know where that is, then it not only makes a difference which way you go, but it makes it easier for you to decide.

  9. WHICH WAY? Deciding which way to go requires first that you decide where you want to go to.

  10. College readiness model www.1to1laptopdoctor.weebly.com

  11. Implications for administrators • Pay attention to the Hype Cycle and Horizon Reports for technology adoption • Plan for the long-term with technology • Try to put new technology in the hands of teachers first (6-12 months ideal) • Make sure security and infrastructure is solid (wireless access, bandwidth, security) • Work to limit distractions for students to promote college readiness (policies and practices)

  12. Horizon Report • A comprehensive research venture established in 2002 by the News Media Consortium that identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact over the coming five years in education around the globe. • Link to report:http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2013-horizon-report-k12.pdf

  13. Timeline

  14. 1 Year or less adoption-Cloud computing • Chrome Books • Virtualization • Google Apps • Smart Phones • Security

  15. 1 Year or less adoption-Mobile learning Tablets, smartphones, and mobile apps have become too capable, too ubiquitous, and too useful to ignore, and their distribution defies traditional patterns of adoption, both by consumers, where even economically disadvantaged families find ways to make use of mobile technology, and in schools, where the tide of opinion has dramatically shifted when it comes to mobiles in schools.

  16. We know this in Iowa! https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=204621204869077342726.00048ce0c44b0e785ae9b

  17. 2-3 Years-Learning Analytics

  18. 2-3 Years-Open content • Non-profits • Creative Commons • Flipped Classroom

  19. 4-5 years-3D printing

  20. 4-5 Years-Virtual & remote labs • Allow for multiple attempts on labs • Good for STEM • Usually well-funded • Very engaging for students

  21. Understanding Gartner’s hype cycle

  22. Comparing Hype to Horizon Reports • Technologies On the rise-Mashware, Quantum Computing, Education Tablet, Campus App Store, Student Retention CRM, Citizen Developers • At the peak- Adaptive e-textbooks, Big Data, Gamification, MOOC, Social Software Standards, Adaptive Learning • Sliding into the trough-Digital Preservation of Research Data, BYOD Strategy, Mobile-Learning Low-Range Handsets, Open-Source Financials, Web-Based Office Productivity Suites, Social Learning Platform for Education, Mobile-Learning Smartphones, E-Textbooks, Cloud Email for Staff and Faculty, Virtual Environments/Worlds • Climbing the Slope-Mass Notification Services, Hosted Virtual Desktops, Open-Source Learning Repositories, IT Infrastructure Utility, Intellectual Property Rights and Royalties Management Software, Unified Communications and Collaboration, Tablets, Game Consoles as Media Hubs • Entering the plateau-E-Book Readers, Self-Publishing, Mashups

  23. Your challenge Use the Hype Cycle or Horizon Report to: 1. Find a technology you want to learn more about that could benefit your school. 2. Find a school that is effectively using a technology from the models in the Horizon Report.

  24. Staying updated on Future Horizon Reports • Interested in these emerging technology topics? Learn more about them and other edtech insights by “liking” us on Facebook at facebook.com/newmediaconsortium and following us on Twitter at twitter.com/nmcorg.
