  1. HIGHLIGHTS (and lessons) OF HLY-03-03 Shelf-Basin Interaction (SBI)Program Mooring Cruise 2003 University of Washington (UW), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF), Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO), University of Delaware (UDel), Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) Rebecca Woodgate, University of Washington Funded by ONR and NSF-OPP, SBI Program

  2. Chukchi Sea – as we thought we knew it Three main outflows - Barrow Canyon - Central Gap - Herald Canyon Western waters most nutrient rich Outflows move east and north Seasonal and interannual variability

  3. SBI Mooring Cruise HLY-03-03September 11th – October 18th 2003 14 mooring recoveries 15 mooring deployments 321 CTD casts 953 salt samples 948 nutrient samples 842 oxygen samples 548 chlorophyll samples 34 VPR casts 11 net tows 63 XBTs 70 Sonobuoys ADCP and Seabeam data (130 styrofoam cups)

  4. SBI – The First Years

  5. Seabeam eyes under the sea (Val Schmidt, LDEO)

  6. Sea Surface Temperature on the Beaufort Line Days - note movement of front on timescale of days

  7. Beaufort – 29th Sept 2003 and 1st Oct 2003

  8. Results of a strong westward wind 3rd October 5th October Ship’s ADCP of the Beaufort slope current system (red= towards you) (Andreas Muncheow, UDel)

  9. The Eddy Band-wagon

  10. Eddies everywhere http://psc.apl.washington.edu/SBI2003.html - goto Preliminary Sections

  11. Eddy Census 1 eddy = (10 km radius, 50m) ~ 2 x 1010 m3 Flux through Bering Strait ~ 1 Sv ~ 3 x 1013 m3 per yr If all eddies, makes ~1000 eddies a year. Do we see 1000 eddies??? - no - XBT lines

  12. Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea 2003 23rd June 2003 Convention line Fluorescence Chlorophyll from SeaWifs Satellite from NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and Orbimage 5th – 7th July 2003

  13. Chukchi slope velocity 2002-2003red=73 20N blue=73 37N

  14. Chukchi Slope 2002-2003TS-properties Temperature Maximum is December – March, i.e. advective from the south Intrusions of Atlantic Water in Autumn 73 20N - red 60m/70m water 73 37N - cyan 60m/110m water - navy 100m/110m water

  15. = Three main outflows - Barrow Canyon - Central Gap - Herald Canyon = Most nutrients in West = Outflows move east & north = Seasonal & interannual variability Chukchi Sea - Revised = Taylor columns separating flow streams (e.g.Hanna Shoal) = Eddies = Wind-driven undercurrents = Offshore & onshore flow at Chukchi Slope = TS advection from the south (at Chukchi & Beaufort slopes) = Inertial/tidal flows 20 cm/s+
