What does “gender identity” mean? (p.1) • “Gender identity” is broadly defined by the Guidelines as “gendered identification, self-expression and appearance” corresponding to a deeply-felt psychological identification as male or female. • Gender identity may or may not correspond to a person’s sex assigned at birth. • Employees may not be subject to discrimination or harassment based on gender identity.
What does “gender transition” mean? (p.2) • “Gender transition” refers to transition from male to female, or from female to male. • Those who transition feel strongly and persistently that their gender identity is different from their sex at birth, and wish to transition from one gender to the other. • This transition often takes a year or more.
Is this the same as “Transsexual”? (p.2) • This medical term refers to one who desires to have sex reassignment surgery (sometimes called gender confirmation surgery). Its meaning is subject to debate • The recent term “transgender” is a broader term encompassing all gender variance • The Company/Agency’s guidelines do not use the terms transsexual or transgender.

Group Activity • One person in the group should choose a FAQ and ask it aloud to the person on their right. • The person to their right should answer the question to the best of their ability without looking at the answer. Then have them read the written answer aloud. • Go around the group • While going around, write down questions or concerns you have about answering co-worker questions
Group Activity II • One person in the group should role play an employee who requests a meeting with HR and reveals that he or she will start gender transition soon. • Another person should role play the HR person. • The other members of the group will evaluate the interaction to see what worked and what didn’t work from the point of the view of the Company’s/Agency’s policy objectives
