  1. Joseph Stalin Before his death, Lenin warned, “Comrade Stalin… has concentrated enormous power in his hands, and I am not sure that he always knows how to use that power with sufficient caution.”

  2. Stalin Establishes A Totalitarian State Totalitarianism describes a government that takes total, centralized control over every aspect of public and private life Totalitarian leaders appear to provide a sense of security and give direction for the future

  3. Once people realize what’s going on, why does this type of government prevail?

  4. Police terror – rather than protect the citizens; simply carry out government’s policies; spy on/intimidate the citizens and in the most extreme cases, use murder

  5. Indoctrination – instruction in the government beliefs to mold people’s minds; take control of education as it begins with young children

  6. Propaganda and Censorship – release propaganda to sway people to accept certain things; control of mass media – no publication, film, art or music can be released without first being approved by the state

  7. Religious or Ethnic Persecution – create “enemies of the state” to blame for things that go wrong

  8. UNDER TOTALITARIANISM WRITE THIS: A government that has complete control over every aspect of public and private life. Uses police terror, indoctrination, propaganda and censorship, and religious or ethnic persecution to achieve complete control.

  9. Great Purge Stalin built a police state to maintain his power. Monitored telephone lines, planted informers everywhere. Great Purge was a campaign to eliminate anyone who threatened his power. Charged with “crimes against the Communist state” millions were sent to labor camps (Gulag) or executed
