  3. What are clauses?A clause is a group of words that have a subject and a verb. Independent Clause The boy is going to the store I found a large seashell at the beach The boys won the basketball game on Friday Jennifer Lawrence was amazing in the movie American Hustle Examples • Can stand alone as a sentence • Two or more independent clauses put together is called a compound sentence. • You use the 3 ways to correct run-on sentences to put the compound sentence together.

  4. Examples of Phrases • After having eaten • In answer to your question • By remaining totally still What is a Phrase? A phrase is a group of words used as a sentence part. A phrase does not have a subject and a verb. (subject and a predicate) We will learn about the types of phrases next week!

  5. Conjunctions“Conjunction-junction, what’s your function?” • REMEMBER FANBOYS! • For • And • Nor • But • Or • Yet • So A conjunction is used to combine two independent clauses with a comma!

  6. Compound Sentences • Two or more combined independent clauses • The sentences that are combined should have similar or related subjects. • DO: I love to watch chick flicks and Chris likes to watch action packed films. • Don’t: I love to watch chick flicks and Chris likes to go to the mall.

  7. Identify the Clause or Phrase • Smashing into the fence • Before the first test • I despise Alfredo sauce • Whenever the bell rings • I found a pair of shoes I like

  8. How can we combine Independent Clauses? Think about how we correct run-on sentences… • Comma Conjunction ( , ____ ) • Conjunction ( ______ and _____ ) • Semicolon ( ; )

  9. Let’s Practice Combining Independent Clauses! He needs to get some groceries. It broke in my beach bag. The girls lost 47-38. She should win an Oscar. The boy is going to the store I found a large seashell at the beach The boys won the basketball game on Friday Jennifer Lawrence was amazing in the movie American Hustle

  10. Come up with your own Independent Clauses! On your paper create several pairs of independent clauses. Do not combine them! For example: My favorite snack is salsa and chips Chris loves to eat soft pretzels.

  11. Make Compound Sentences • Now combine your independent clauses to create compound sentences. • Remember • Combine using the three ways we discussed • Only combine related clauses
