Explorers Established New France • 1524: Jacques Cartier(France)- Reached Canada, Named St. Lawrence River • 1608: Samuel de Champlain: Established present day Quebec which became base of France’s Empire “New France” • 1673: Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet- Explored and claimed Great Lakes • 1683: Sieur de La Salle: Claimed LA
English Arrive in North America • A. Settlement in Jamestown: -1607 English established a settlement off coast of Virginia= Called Jamestown Horrible Start= 7/10 ppl died England’s 1st successful settlement in N.A
B. Puritans Create a “New England” • 1620- Pilgrims found 2nd English colony • Plymouth and Jamestown • Religious Freedom • Puritans follow 10 yrs. Later and colony in Mass. Bay • Model Christian Community
C. Dutch found New Netherlands • 1609- Henry Hudson established a Dutch settlement known as New Netherlands • Very successful trading post • Allowed other Europeans to settle (Germans, French)
D. Colonizing the Caribbean • French colonized: Haiti, Guadeloupe, and Martinique • English: Barbados and Jamaica • Dutch: Aruba • Huge Cotton and sugar plantations and Slaves
