Motivation and Objectives • Motivation the involvement in Grid Testbeds • Participation in LHC experiments (HEP): • ATLAS • Participation in Air Pollution Modelling • Objectives: • Initial development and exploitation of a Grid infrastructure in Valencia. • Physics and Chemistry analysis preparation for Grid computing. • Provide support and infrastructure for: • Development of Grid applications; • Test and validation of Grid applications.
GRID Projects • DATAGRID (from European Union) • CROSSGRID (from European Union) • SPECIAL ACTION (Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology) • Three-Years Project (Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology)
Current Grid Activities • Evaluation of the DATAGRID middleware • Implementation of the Valencia testbed site: • Maintenance of a Globus meta-directory: • Institutional MDS of Valencia “dc=ific, dc=es, o=Grid” • Integration of Valencia into the DATAGRID testbed: • Globus gatekeeper; • Globus Condor and PBS job-manager; • GSI authentication through the Spanish (in IFCA) CA • Etc,... • Participation in DATAGRID testbeds 0 and 1
Current Grid Activities • We are participating in this year in the DATA CHALLENGE 1 (DC1) of ATLAS experiment with two goals: • Event productions in our farm in order to provide samples for physics studies and make the Technical Design Report for the end of 2002. • To test in our farm the new software, including Geant4, the new event data model and the evaluation of two database technologies, Objectivity and Root-I/O. • 400k events have been simulated in DC1 phase 1 (non EDG used, but foreseen for phase 2 ) • Total CPU time: 21 Khours • Total disk space: 1.1 TBytes
Networking in Spain • ISP: RedIris (Spanish Academic Research Network) • Geant connectivity at 2.5 Gbits/s. • US connectivity at 180 Mbits/s.
Valencia Networking • Gigabit Ethernet Backbone in local area network. • Fibre optic link with University BackBone using Gigabit Ethernet • Fibre optic link of 155 Mbits/s with IP over ATM from the University to RedIris (Shared among other Universities and research centers of the “Comunitat Valenciana”)
Production Farm • Infrastructure for Grid activities from CSIC-Universitat de València: • Grupo de Ordenadores para el GRID (GoG) • 192 CPU’s • Chassis: 2U (Rack Mountable) • CPU: AMD K7 Athlon @1.2GHz • Memory: 1 Gbytes, PC133 • HD: 40 Gbytes, ATA 100 @7200 rpm • NIC: 100 Mbps full duplex.PXE 2.1, WOL
Production Farm • 9 Racks 19” • 9 switches ( • 2 switches (Gigabit Ethernet 12 ports) • Running Linux RH 6.2 (considering RH 7.2) • Job scheduling by CONDOR (looking at PBS) Catalyst 3524 XL fast Ethernet with Gigabit Ethernet uplink)
GRID test FARM • Farm 1 (EDG v1.2.0) • 5 AMD processor: • K7 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM and 40GB HD; • Running Linux RH 6.2 • Job scheduling by PBS • Being used to test DATAGRID testbed1: • CE: bee001.ific.uv.es • WN: bee002.ific.uv.es • SE: bee003.ific.uv.es • UI: grid1.ific.uv.es • LCFG: lcfg2.ific.uv.es
GRID test FARM • Farm 2 (EDG v1.1.2) • 5 Intel processor: • Pentium MMX 150MHz, 64 MB of RAM and 2 GB HD. • Running Linux RH 6.2 • Job scheduling by Condor • Being used to test DATAGRID testbed 0: • Gatekeeper; • WN;
Grid Test FarmBeing used to test DATAGRID • LCFG • CE • WN • SE • UI
Human Resources • IFIC and ICMoL have: • 2 Engineers; • 2 Physicists; • 2 Chemists; • 2 Post-doc; • Two new positions for the IFIC and ICMoL are being created (Using CrossGrid contract). • IFIC and ICMoL Computer and Technical personnel.
