BACKGROUND INFORMATION • Statistics Act empowers CSO to conduct the Census • Census taking in Swaziland dates back to 1898 • Since 1936 ten yearly interval period has been maintained and questionnaires have been improving over the years • The last census was conducted in 1997 thus the next one to be conducted in 2007 • Publication and Dissemination of census results to be completed mid 2009
WHY A CENSUS FOR SWAZILAND • Major source of population data • Sampling frame • Provides information for formulation/designing, monitoring and evaluating development programmes • Provides more detailed information that improve targeting of resources and interventions which leads to improved decision making
PREPARATIONS FOR THE 2007 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS • Cartographic work completed • Questionnaire design – includes questions on household assets and agriculture activities • Manuals prepared • Data entry application finalized • Regional Census Officers recruitment • Community mobilization/Publicity • Census T-shirt & bags
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE • Technical Assistance from UNFPA and covered: Questionnaire design Project Document Data entry application Advocacy and Publicity Strategy • Technical Support through GDDS was on GIS. It involved: Needs Assessment Setting up of the GIS unit Training on software
CHALLENGES • Inadequate funding • Inadequate staff • Inadequate vehicles for field work • Accommodation for field officers • Close involvement of stake holders • Recruitment of field staff Enumerators – School leavers Supervisors - Tertiary/School leavers high grades
INTERVENTIONS • Establishment of good relationships with local and international donors • Rapid release & wide dissemination • Fast track the review of Statistics Act • Avoid running parallel major projects • To involve constituency structures
2007 THEMATIC REPORTS(1/2) • Evaluation of the census data quality • Population structures • Spatial distribution of the population (including urbanization) • Economic characteristics of the population • Fertility • Mortality (including maternal mortality) • Migration • Marital status and nuptiality • Household and living conditions (including the typology of households)
2007 THEMATIC REPORTS(2/2) • Population projections and prospective study on social needs for education, employment, health, and housing • Women in Swaziland • Children and youth • Population with disability • Elderly • Measure of poverty from census data (including poverty mapping) • Literacy, Education • Executive summary of the analysis main results (including the indicators recommended by international conferences)
