ENIAC, The first electronic general use computer • The ENIAC, which was unveiled in 1946, was a modular computer, which meant It had different panels to do different actions. Besides the speed for it’s time, It was amazing for It’s immense size, which took up 1800 square feet. It was also the first mainframe computer.
The Integrated Circuit • The integrated circuit, also known as a microchip, was invented by Jack Kilby in 1959. This revolutionized the electronics, wiping out the vacuum tube, which produced far too many failures. It could be used as an amplifier, oscillator, timer, microprocessor, and computer memory. It was also far cheaper to make. This allowed the minicomputer to be developed.
The minicomputer • The first successful minicomputer was Digital Equipment Corporation’s 12-bit PDP-8,(and came out in 1964) which was much cheaper than computers such as the ENIAC, at $16,000. Later versions took advantage of the microchip, adding many more advantages. The term “minicomputer” Is all but gone now, replaced by “midrange computer”
The Mouse • The computer mouse, nicknamed because the “tail” came out the end, came out in 1964. It allowed for easy control for computers instead of using the arrow keys. It was invented by Douglas Engelbart.
The Floppy Disk • The floppy disk, commercially released in 1971, was a form of computer storage, kind of like a CD. It was composed of a thin and flexible magnetic storage medium. Today the floppy disk has become virtually obsolete to consumers, although they can be used as emergency boots in aging systems without support for other bootable media. The movie and music industries still use equipment requiring standard floppy disks.
The Microcomputer • The first microcomputer was invented in 1975, by Ed Roberts. The term “minicomputer” has come to mean a computer with a microprocessor as its Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The Laptop • Most historians consider the first true portable computer to be the Osborne 1. It came out in 1981, weighed 24 pounds, and cost $1795. The laptop was never successful.
The Compact Disc • The compact disc, or CD, was introduced in 1982. It was originally developed to store sound recordings only, but was later adapted to store many forms of data.
The USB • The USB flash drive is another form of computer storage, introduced in 1998. Unlike the floppy disk however, the USB can be rewritten, as much as 100,000 times, depending on the type of memory chip. It is significantly smaller as well. As of September 2011, drives of as much as 256 Gigabytes are available, with as much as 2 terabytes in the works.
The iPad • The iPad was released on April 3rd, 2010. It was one of the first tablet computers, which allowed you to have a mobile computer, It’s size and weight being between a contemporary smartphone and a laptop. It is mainly used for audio/visual media.
