SUBJECT • The subject in a sentence is the person or thing that does the action. • Find the SUBJECT: • He drove the car. • Josh went to baseball practice. • The dogs went outside.
Ask yourself, "Who did that?" • WHO drove the car? • HE drove the car, so HE is the subject. • WHO went to baseball practice? • JOSH went to baseball practice, so JOSH is the subject. • WHO went outside? • The DOGS went outside, so THE DOGS are the subject.
OBJECT • The object in the sentence is the person or thing that is affected by the action. • Find the OBJECT: • Colin threw the ball. • She picked up her daughter. • I read that book.
Ask yourself, "Who/What was affected?" • What was thrown? • THE BALL was thrown. • Who was picked up? • HER DAUGHTER was picked up • What was read? • THE BOOK was read.
Types of Objects • DIRECT OBJECT-The direct object is what is being affected by the verb. • INDIRECT OBJECT-The indirect object is who or what gets/recieves the direct object. • FOR EXAMPLE: • I threw the ball. – THE BALL is the direct object, because it is being thrown. • I threw the ball to Josh. – THE BALL is still the direct object and JOSH is the indirect object, because he is receiving the ball.
Let’s Practice! Name the subject and object in the following sentences. The quarterback threw the ball. Quarterback, ball Garrett called the doctor. Garrett, doctor She went to the store. She, store I work at the mall. I, mall He threw the ball to Melissa. He, ball (direct), Melissa (indirect)
REMEMBER: • For an indirect object to be present, there must also be a direct object. • Indirect objects are not as common as direct objects. • The subject is the person or thing that is doing the action. • The object is the person or thing that is affected by the action.
