  1. Source Note-taking How to use index cards to take notes on your sources

  2. Why do note cards? • It is useful to take notes on index cards because it gives you the flexibility to change the order of your notes and group them together easily. • You can buy a few packages of 3x5 index cards at most drugstores or stationery stores. • They will help you to: • identify the sources of quotations and ideas for citing your sources later (giving credit to your sources). • find sources again if you need them. • make your works cited (a list of the sources from which you used borrowed material in your project).

  3. How do I create note cards? • Write the heading of the note at the top of each note card. • The heading will be the main idea of the note you are writing on the card • The heading may correspond to your categories/sub-categories from your initial outline • Write only one main point on a note card • Only write information directly related to your question/thesis statement. • Write only essential words, abbreviate when possible. • Be accurate: double check direct quotes and statistics.

  4. Creation of note cards continued… • Identify direct quotes with quotation marks and the person's name. • Bracket your own words [ ] when you add them into a quote. • Use ellipsis points (...) where you leave out non-essential words from a quote. • Distinguish between 'fact' and 'opinion.’ • Opinions are not to be used AT ALL in research papers • Therefore, write only FACTS on your note cards • Include the source's number on the card • Write the page number of the source after the note. • Use the word 'over' to indicate information on the back of the card.
