To talk about the present: • The simple present: • Bill Gates gana mucho dinero. • Bill Gates earns a lot of money. • Oprah Winfrey vive en Chicago. • Oprah Winfrey lives in Chicago. • The present progressive describes what is happening right now. • Estoy leyendo. • I am reading. • El perro está comiendo. • The dog is eating.

  3. To talk about the past: • The preterit describes a single past event that is over. • El perro comió el hueso. • The dog ate the bone. • The imperfect describes a circumstance or regularly occurring event in the past. • Tucker tenía un mullet en los 80. • Tucker had a mullet in the 80s. • Mis padres hablaban Chino en casa. • My parents used to speak Chinese at home.

  4. The past continued: • The present perfect describes what has happened at some point in the past. • No he fumado. • I haven’t smoked. • The imperfect progressive describes what was happening at a certain moment. • El ratero estaba comiendo cuando la policía llegó. • The thief was eating when the police arrived.

  5. To talk about the future. • You can use the verb ir (to go) + a + the infinitive (dictionary form). • Voy a comer una hamburguesa. • I’m going to eat a hamburger. • Mi hijo va a estudiar medicina. • My son is going to study medicine.
