  3. Hans Lippershey • Born about 1570 in Wezel, Germany. • Moved to middelburg, Holland in 1600. • Spectacles maker. • Discovered arrangement of convex and concave lens to see distant objects. • Died in 1619.

  4. Galileo Galilei • Born Feb. 15, 1564 in Pisa Italy. • Mathematician and philosopher. • Great renaissance engineer. • Got interested in spectacles. • Made first telescope almost immediately.

  5. Galileo’s discoveries • Pointed his telescope to the heavens. • Discovered the moon’s relief and its oceans. • Studied the solar system particularly. • Discovered three of Jupiter’s moons.

  6. Discoveries (cont’) • Read about Copernicus’s theory: • -The earth is a sphere • -The earth is not the center of universe. • Galileo supported this theory. • Led to trouble with the church. • Galileo had visual proof with telescope.

  7. Conclusions • Many discoveries made thanks to the telescope, from Galileo’s spectacles to today’s space telescopes. • This invention had many repercussions on the way people thought about the universe. • Discoveries are still taking place!!
