  1. 9th Grade PEP Academic Planning

  2. Overview • Review credits, GPA, and transcripts • Review individual students’ transcripts • Option 1: Print and distribute transcripts by class • Option 2: Have students log onto student portal • Play jeopardy game to review graduation requirements • Complete Naviance career & PS survey (if students haven’t done so already). Review Career Cluster results, if necessary. • Introduce Naviance course planner and completed 4-year course plan

  3. Credit Review • Students earn credits by passing a class (receiving an A, B, C, or D) • For each standard one-semester course students’ pass, they earn 5 credits • (Courses may be worth more or less than five credits, depending on several factors, including how often the course meets.) • If students fail (earn an F) in a course, they do NOT earn any credits and will need to repeat the course • Freshman MUST pass Intro to Lit & Comp and Algebra 1 AND earn at least 30-35 credits per semester to be considered on-track to graduate.

Transcript Review • How many credits has the student earned so far? • 17.5 + 2.5 = 20 credits • Let’s try to calculate this for ourselves. • Class Credits earned • Algebra 1 • Algebra 1 lab • Earth Science • Geography • Into to Lit • Intro to Lit Lab • Team Sports • Student Assistant • 9th Grade Academy • Is this student on-track to graduate? • No, need to pass Intro to Lit, Algebra 1, AND earn at least 30-35 credits to be on-track 0 0 5 0 0 5 5 2.5 2.5 These 2 classes are unique because they only offer 2.5 credits

  7. Transcript Review via Student Portal From here, you can view your attendance, grades, & other important information to help you stay on-track.

Review your Transcript • Find your GPA • Find your total credits • Find your days absent …tardy • Are you on-track? • Is so, what do you need to continue doing to stay on-track? • If not, what do you need to do differently to get back on-track? Talk to your parent(s), teachers, and counselor. Ask for their guidance in helping you create a plan to get back on-track.

  13. Row 1, Col 1 What is 240? This is how many credits you need to graduate.

  14. 1,2 What is PE or Physical Education? This is an elective that may be fulfilled by taking Marching Band or ROTC.

  15. 1,3 What are Language Arts and Math? These are the subjects you need to take and pass 40 credits of to graduate.

  16. 1,4 What are DPS athletics? Football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, wrestling and swimming are a few examples.

  17. 2,1 What is 5? This is how many credits a one-semester class is worth.

  18. 2,2 What is Algebra 1? This is the math class most freshman take.

  19. 2,3 What are Science and Social Studies? These are the subjects you need to take and pass 30 credits of to graduate.

  20. 2,4 What are clubs/activities? Speech and Debate, Foreign Language, Chess, Yearbook and Future Business Leaders of America are a few examples.

  21. 3,1 What is 60? This is how many credits you need to take (on average) each year.

  22. 3,2 What is US History? This is the social studies class you should take your sophomore year.

  23. 3,3 What are Electives? These are the courses you Need to take a total of 100 Credits to graduate.

  24. 3,4 What is student council/government? The group elected from the student body to serve as representatives to help govern the school.

  25. 4,1 What is zero? This is how many credits you earn when you earn an F in a class.

  26. 4,2 What is Introduction to Literature and Composition? This is the English or Language Artsclass you should take your freshman year.

  27. 4,3 What is Fine Arts? This is the requirement that art, music, and/or CTE (Career and Technical Education) fulfills.

  28. 4,4 What are dances? Homecoming and Prom are examples.

  30. If you haven’t done so already…Career & PS Survey • Click “about me” • Click “dps career & postsecondary goal survey 2012-13” • Complete the survey and click (Click to next slide, if you need help logging onto CIC to view your Career Cluster results)

  31. Go to www.collegeincolorado.org if you need to review your Career Cluster quiz results to complete the survey. • Sign in using the information below: Click “Sign In” (dps + student ID number) dps482679 (6 digit birthday, mmddyy) 040900

  32. Click “Learn About Yourself” Click “Career Cluster Survey” • Click “See your results now”

  33. 4-Year Course Plan 1) Click the “courses” tab 2) Click “manage my course plans”

  34. 4-Year Course Plan 1) Click to “add a new plan” 2) Click “Create new draft plan” 3) Select one of the requirements to the left to view all available courses 4) Add the courses you have passed or are currently taking. Add any classes you plan to take over the next 4 years. Be sure that your plan adds up to 240 credits and meets all graduation requirements. 5) For each course you select, click to add the course to your plan.

  35. 4-Year Plan Credit Check • Click “review & finalize” to review your course plan • Check to see that the credits in your plan meet the credits required for graduation.
