  2. Overview • Review Holland Career Types • Complete College in Colorado Interest Profiler • Research career interests by educational requirements, earning potential, and Career Cluster

  3. Why College in Colorado? College in Colorado career surveys help students to identify and explore careers that are a good fit for their unique interests and personality type.

  4. Holland’s Theory • There are 6 different Personality Types Realistic (Doers) Investigative (Thinkers) Artistic (Creators) Social (Helpers) Enterprising (Persuaders) Conventional (Organizers) • There are 6 basic types of work environments Realistic (Doers) Investigative (Thinkers) Artistic (Creators) Social (Helpers) Enterprising (Persuaders) Conventional (Organizers) • By selecting a career or work environment that matches your personality type, you are more likely to be successful and satisfied in your work!

  5. Game: Is this a match? • Teacher directions (optional): • Print handout and make front/back copies so that one side says yes and the other side says no. • Cut out around boxes and make sure there are enough cards for each student in the class. • When you read the personality and career descriptions (next 3 slides), have students hold up a yes if they think this person and career would be a good match and a no if they think it is not a good match.

  6. Is this a match? Career: Agricultural Technician You set up and maintain laboratory equipment and collect samples from crops or animals. You prepare specimens and record data to assist scientists in biology or other related experiments. The people you work with like to work by themselves and don't like explaining their ideas to other people. • Personality Type: Social • You are a "Helper". • You enjoy assisting people in various ways. • You like working in groups. • You find that verbal and communication skills come naturally to you. • You like being around people and helping them with problems • Socializing is fun for you Social Investigative “Helpers” “Thinkers”

Is this a match? • Personality Type: Entreprising • You enjoy leading, persuading, & selling for economical gain • You respond well to competition and enjoy leading other people. • You are willing to take risks. • You value status, power, money and material possessions. • You describe yourself as ambitious or energetic Career: Advertising Sales Agent You sellor solicit advertising, such as advertising space in publications, custom-made signs, and air time on TV and radio. At work, you are rewarded for your sales performance and achievement. The people you work with are ambitious and value power and prestige. Enterprising Enterprising “Persuaders” “Persuaders”

Is this a match? • Personality Type: Conventional • You are a natural "Organizer". • You enjoy systematic, step-by-step work tasks. • You like to keep things neat and in order. • You prefer working in stable environments with predictable routines. • You are detail-oriented and persistent • You may describe yourself as efficient or dependable. Career: Radio/TV Announcer You introduce various types of radio or television programs, provide information to listeners or viewers, and interview or question guests to entertain or inform the public. The people you work with are creative. They enjoy things like art, music, books, and personal expression. They don’t like rigid rules and structure. Conventional Artistic “Organizers” “Creators”

  10. Some students may be prompted to answer a few questions before they may begin. • Examples: • Select your grade (8th Grade) • Answer a security question (e.g. What is my mother’s name?) • Agree to all terms and conditions

  11. Click “Learn About Yourself” Click “Career Cluster Survey” • Click “Get Started”

  12. There are 180 questions. For each question, say if you like or dislike that activity listed. For the best result, take your time and try to avoid selecting “Not Sure.” Raise your hand if you are unaware of a word; I will write it on the board for the benefit of the entire class.

  13. When you finish the survey, you will be able to see how you ranked among all 6 personality types and read the description for yourtop 2 personality types. Read your results and determine if they sound like you. Record your results in part 1 of your handout. Next, click “View Careers” to explore career options that may be a good match for you, given your top 2 personality types.

  14. Explore Career Options Select at least 4 careers to record in part 2 of your handout. Record the education level, average annual earnings, and Career Cluster.

  15. Add to your Portfolio • Click into your top 4 careers of interest to learn more. Use the tabs on the left to help explore. • Click “Add to Portfolio” to save this career in your profile to view later.
