Meet Muhammad • Born in 570 AD • Merchant in Mecca • Caravan manager for a wealthy widow, Khadija, whom he later married • Unhappy, so retreats to a cave to reflect – receives first revelation from God at age 40
Muhammad, the Prophet • Began preaching – little early success in Mecca • Goes to Medina, where he gains a larger following • Revelations with God form the basis of the Qu’ran – the most important document of the Islamic faith • Muhammad considered the last in a line of prophets that stretched back to Abraham, Adam • Dies in 632 AD – by then most of Arabia converted to Islam
