Giles Corey at Trial . . . • Accused by Ann Putnum, Jr., Mercy Lewis, Abigail Williams of witchcraft • 81 years old • Thrown into jail • When on trial, refused to enter a plea • Refused to be tried, so he stood mute • In an attempt to acquire a confession, Sherriff George Corwin put Corey to pressed death • Peine forte et dure (illegal)
What was piene forte et dure? • Chained to the ground on your back • Naked • Board on your stomach and heavy stones put on top of you, crushing to death • Especially cruel • Supposed to bring forth a confession through terrible pain and slow suffering
Who Was Giles Corey? • Prosperous farmer • Wanted to follow in his father’s line of work • Full member of the church • High in the church • Upper Class • In good shape financially • Accused in 1692 • One of six people
Relationships . . . • Married three times • Last marriage was to Martha Corey in 1690 • Accused as well during witch trials • Put to death • Had an 8 year old son • Stubborn
Reputation . . . • Friendly, good family man • Accused by girls only because he wanted his wife’s innocence known • Prime target also because of his prior conviction of murder
Hardships . . . • Had to wait while Martha (his wife) was on trial for the same thing • Waited for 8 months • Was executed before he was able to see her again
