Course Outline: Refer to your handout • We will investigate a variety of frameworks, such as ecozones, to explore Canada. We will look at the interconnections among the landforms, climate, soils, vegetation, wildlife, and human activities in order to: develop geographic knowledge and skills, understand Canada’s diversity and role in the world community as well as the importance of sustainable development.

Types of Assessment, Evaluation, and Activities • Written article summaries and reports, notes and notebook, charts and graphs, maps, projects, assignments, unit tests and quizzes • Oral presentations, class participation • Culminating Activities final exam, final project
Assessment and Evaluation Breakdown Term Work Assessment = 70% • Assignments 30% • Daily Work 5% • Tests/Quizzes 20% • Unit Culminating Tasks 15% Summative Assessment = 30% • Final Exam 15% • Culminating Task 15%
Homework/Assignments • 1. Homework is an important follow-up activity to regular classroom work. Assignments reinforce and review what has been taught in the classroom. Review of classroom work on a regular basis is necessary for success. • 2. Homework is assigned and corrected together in the classroom. • 3. Missed tests, quizzes and oral presentations can be made up on student time IF a valid reason is provided for missing the due date.
Notebook Organization and Textbook Requirements • Your notebook will be organized by Units as follows: Intro, Units 1-5 and a section devoted to work on your culminating activity. Notebooks will be checked on a regular basis for organization and completion. Your textbook must be covered with either a book cover (which can be purchased at the dollar store or Staples) or with paper.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS • Student Expectations: • Please be on time for class everyday • If you miss a class it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you have missed from a classmate first, then go to the binder for any missed handouts, then see me for further help. • If you have a VALID ABSENCE, you will be expected to write any test you missed the day you return • Demonstrate RESPECT for yourself, the members of the class and any class tools used. • USE COMMON SENSE I Am Canadian Rant
Unit by Unit Competition • Most days we will begin with review from the previous day. • In your groups, try to answer as many questions as possible to accumulate points during the unit. • The group with the most points at the end of the unit wins a prize. • Each unit there will be a seating change and thus new groups. • I will try to be as fair as possible in terms of determining correct answers, etc.
