  1. Glynn Academy AP Night January 17th, 2013

  2. Welcome and thank you • We want to welcome and thank you for coming to learn more about the College Board Advanced Placement Program and the AP Program here at Glynn Academy. • This information will be important in the coming weeks as we ask you to think about and decide what classes you need to register for , for next year at Glynn Academy.

  3. What is Advanced Placement? • College level courses taught in high school. • There are 34 different AP classes offered by College Board and currently 21 offered by Glynn Academy. • AP courses are rigorous college level courses that allow students to earn college credit by making a 3,4, or 5 on a national test administered by College Board each May. • AP teachers are certified to teach courses by attending week long training classes taught by College Board.

  4. Why do students enroll in AP courses? • Rigor- AP courses challenge students to reach their potential and grow toward becoming independent thinkers and problem solvers. • Relevance – AP courses are relevant to learners in today’s modern world . Students who take multiple AP courses begin to see how many disciplines are interwoven and they begin to understand some of the complexities of today’s global issues. • Interest – AP courses expose students to content that is broader and deeper than traditional high school courses. The teachers are trained to be content specialists and deliver the curriculum in a way that calls for more than memorizing facts and figures. Students will be expected to engage in intense discussions, solve problems collaboratively, and learn to write clearly and persuasively justifying their position with evidence.

  5. GPA – In Glynn County, AP courses are weighted on a 5 point scale. Students earn one “quality point” for a passing grade in the course. • Admission to College-Colleges and universities look at student transcripts for evidence of challenging coursework and these students stand out in the admission process. • Earn College Credit – Students passing the AP exam with a 3, 4, or 5 can earn college credit. Be forewarned not all colleges accept all AP passing scores. • College Success – Studies show that students who took AP courses in high school are more likely to stay on track and finish within four years earning a Bachelors degree than students who did not attempt AP classes. AP colleges credits can also allow for students in college to move into upper level courses earlier and these students often are more likely to pursue a double major or study abroad.

  6. Who should Enroll in AP? Students who are committed to: • learning • studying daily • have good attendance • good time management • and meet the criteria or get committee approval. Comments by Mary Belechak- AP Human Experience

  7. Glynn County AP Criteria • See the chart – which is also in the course catalog and registration material • Grade level requirements – It is recommended that most 9th grade students begin with one AP class and that is AP Human Geography. 10th graders – one to three 11th graders- one to four 12th -one to four • Prerequisites – exceeding on CRCT and EOCTs as well as some specific course prerequisites • Exceptions can be made by committee of AP teacher, counselor, student, parent, and administrator.
