Baldness • Male pattern baldness • Female pattern baldness • Defined pattern baldness • Tends to cluster in families 2
Male Pattern Baldness • Hair recedes • Hair thins 4 • Begins at various ages • Usually at age 30 1
Male Pattern Baldness • More common in men • Affects 35 million men in the U.S. 1 • Partial or complete baldness
Female Pattern Baldness • Hair becomes thinner all over • Hairline does not receive • Rarely leads to complete baldness 3
Related Diseases • Coronary Heart disease • Diabetes • Enlargement of the prostate • High Blood Pressure • Prostate Cancer • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Women) 1
Cause of Androgenic Alopecia • Androgen called dihydrotestosterone2 • Responsible for sexual development • Androgens regulate hair growth • Increased levels of androgens = short cycle of hair growth 1
The AR Gene • Provides instructions for making a protein 2 • This protein is called an androgen receptor • Variations in the AR gene lead to increased activity of androgen receptors 1
Cure • The only thing that helps is Minoxidil • It lengthens the anagen phase • Increases blood in the hair follicle
Why It Should Be Studied • It should be studied so we can find the ultimate cure • We should find a way to manipulate the AR gene • If we could solve this problem, we could help millions
