  1. CHAPTER 5 – CONTINUED The Prophet MOSES and THE EXODUS • The word prophetis from the Greek,meaning “one who speaks before others.” • God entrusted the Hebrew prophets with delivering the divine message to rulers and the people. • Moses, a name from the Hebrew mashah means (“to draw”).

  2. The Exodus is the foundational event in the history of the Chosen People. Around 1250 BC, the Hebrews fled Egypt, led by the prophet Moses.

  4. The Prophet Moses Central figure in the Old Testament God appeared to Moses in a burning bush that was not consumed by the fire. God instructed Moses to lead the Chosen People to freedom.

  7. The Exodus and the Giving of the Law Challenges in the Desert Other Themes from Leviticus and Deuteronomy Leviticus stresses the theme of God’s holiness and our need to worship him with love. Deuteronomy centers on God’s love of Israel and exhorts the nation to choose between obedience to God and the Law. The people grew frustrated with Moses and made a golden calf to worship. Numbers records the “murmuring” of the People against Moses. It took forty years before the Chosen People could enter the Promised Land.
