Individual Academic Success Intervention By Shawn Wallace COU 781 Fall 2011 Dr. Dowdy
Reclassified Freshmen • Reclassified freshmen are students who did not pass a minimum of 5 credits during their first year in high school.
SIMS (Students, Interventions, Measurements and Settings) • Students: 9 Reclassified Freshmen • Interventions: Participate in Individual Weekly Meetings • Measurement: Grades, Attendance, and Discipline Referrals • Setting: Met individually in the High School Guidance Office Conference Room
Purpose of Intervention • The purpose of this intervention was to work to improve academic performance and attendance, while reduce discipline referrals of reclassified freshmen.
Structure of Meetings • Met with students individually each week, once in small groups of 2-3 for 6 weeks • Each week, grades were individually addressed in each class, and the student was made aware of any missing assignments • Students were encouraged to meet with teachers to address missing work • Some weeks, additional topics were addressed
Structure of Meetings • Week 1 Introduction/Getting to Know You • Week 2 Student Success Skills Self-Evaluation • Week 3 Short Term/Long Term Goals • Week 4 Study Habits/Skills • Week 5 Getting Ready for End of Quarter • Week 6 Final Check Before End of Quarter
Conclusions • This study found that weekly individual meetings with reclassified freshman showed an improvement in grades, attendance, and an overall reduction in discipline referrals.
Recommendations • Further research needs to be done to see if a small group would also be effective. Meeting individually on a weekly basis is time consuming. • Research should be done to determine if it would be just as effective to meet every other week to make individual meets less time consuming • Involve teachers and help encourage communication between students and teachers • Follow up meetings should occur throughout year
