  1. Test Strategies (Setting the Right Tone) Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  2. Introduction • This session will concentrate on making sure that we adopt the right tone in our Test Strategies • That we are aware of our target audience and speak to their concerns • We will • Examine the right time at which a Test Strategy should be written • Explain what you should be aiming to achieve with it • And conclude by looking at ways in which you can maximise your chances of achieving these goals Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  3. When is the right time to write the Test Strategy ? • In practice Test Managers will often complain • They are asked to write the strategy too LATE after a lot of the major decisions have already been taken • They are asked to write the strategy too EARLY because a lot of he detail required is available • And often make both complaints at different times about the same project !!! Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  4. 2 very different issues here…. So let’s deal with them one by one Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  5. 1. Test involved too late Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  6. 1. Test involved too late Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  7. Also… • Generally much easier to address Testing needs before development starts • Better than trying to graft a robust test approach onto a project for which it is not a good fit • Changing approach midway through a delivery much more difficult and expensive • Involving Test Manager will also often expose gaps and issues elsewhere in the strategy Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  8. 2. Test involved too Early Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  9. Timing - Conclusion Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  10. Question • Are there any circumstances where it makes sense to involve the Development but NOT the Test Manager in discussions about Overall Project Strategy? Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  11. Answer NO Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  12. Stand-Alone or Incorporated Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  13. Stand-Alone or Incorporated • Advantages and disadvantages to both approaches • Separate – Highlights role of testing • Separate - Makes testing look unrelated to main project strategy • Together – testing section can get lost • Together - Shows testing is core element of project Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  14. Stand-Alone or Incorporated Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  15. Stand-Alone or Incorporated • Hard to explain logically why Test needs a separate strategy if Development doesn’t • And vice-versa • Both teams are equally important to successful delivery • Whatever the project manager may think….. Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  16. What to put in the Strategy • REMEMBER…. • Strategy sets out WHAT you want Testing to achieve • HOW • WHEN • BY WHOM • Are all subjects best covered in a Test Plan Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans

  17. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  18. Guidelines • Before you write the Strategy, ask • What am I trying to write? • How will I measure success? • How can I increase my chances of getting what I ask for? Amadori Courses: Effective Test Strategies and Plans
