19th Century Anatomy and Physiology Nina, Matt, Jessi, Nick, Thad
Schwann • Did significant work between 1834 and 1838 • 1836: extracted first animal enzyme • 1836-1837: proved yeast carries out common fermentation • Discovered myelin sheath of neurons: Schwann cells • Coined the term “metabolism” to describe chemical changes in cells • Collaborated with Schleiden • 1839: stated all living things have a cellular origin • Cells have independent metabolisms
Schleiden • Botanist, studied plants under a microscope • 1838: Observed that all plants are composed of cells • Nucleus plays an important role in cell division • Co-founder of cell theory with Schwann • Observed cytoplasmic streaming and mycorrhizae • Wrote botany books on plant cytology
Virchow • Studied in Germany • Cellular pathology: nature of disease and structural changes • 1848: disproved view that phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) causes most diseases • Linked cell theory to study of bodily functions • Identified disorders such as cancer and artherosclerosis • Cells are "the ultimate irreducible form of every living element.” • Every cell comes from another cell
Cell Theory • Main contributors: Schwann, Schleiden, Virchow • Cells are the building blocks of life • All living things are made of cells • Cells come from other cells
Zeiss • Made optical instruments to enhance images • Constructed a microscope with a single simple lens to be used for dissection • 1872: joined with physicist Abbe, discovered Abbe sine condition, improved lens quality • Abbe Sine Condition led to the discovery of a new lens called Aprochromat • The Zeiss Company is now a leader in Photographic and Microscopic lens
