PRE/POST ASSESSMENT • What is the overall function of a carbohydrate? • Name the 3 different types of carbohydrates and give a food example for each. • What indicator is used to test for the presence of glucose? Describe the test. • What indicator is used to test for the presence of starch? Describe the test.

Engage Activity Can you rank the carbohydrate food items from the food containing the least complex carbohydrate to the food containing the most complex carbohydrate? • Each group of students will receive a sack with 3 different carbohydrates (one monosaccharide, one disaccharide, and one polysaccharide. • When instructed, open the sack and organize the food items from the least complex to the most complex.

Anchor Activity • Students will go to www.mypyramid.gov and research food choices, normal caloric intake for their age group and activity level, and will use this site to answer the questions in their anchor activity packet. • The teacher can also download information about fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. to place in the anchor activity packet for students to use if they do not have access to a computer.
