What is Science Fiction? • Science fiction is based on imaginary, scientific, or technological advances and major, social, or environmental changes.
What is Included? • Science fiction’s purpose is almost always to make serious comment about the world. • Science fiction includes unknown inventions and is grounded is science. • Science fiction is usually set in the future.
What is Excluded? • Real characters, plots, and settings will never appear in science fiction novels. Events that could happen in real life are also excluded.
Comparison to Realistic Fiction • Realistic fiction can happen in real life, while in science fiction, it can’t happen. All characters, settings, and plots are made up in both genres. Settings in realistic fiction are set in modern times, while in science fiction, it is usually set in the future.
