3. Forbidden planet Forbidden planet was at the forefront of the space sci-fi movement, pioneering newly found sound effects and concepts. Its a film about a human spaceship crew who are given the order to explore a planet which humans inhabitated and take them off the planet. When they arrive they are met by a strange talking robot that takes them to one of the 2 only human inhabitants on the planet. It turns out that all the other people who were on the plant were killed by a strange planetary force. They spend the film investigating why, they discover remains of ancient race that died long ago, the technology they used still works perfectly though and it far overtakes what technologies the humans have. The big twist in the plot is that there is a machine that makes a physical presence from the mind of one of the only inhabitants on the planet and this presence is what killed the other inhabitants, its ends with them killing this man to prevent his mind power to kill them as well.

4. 2001: A Space Odyssey The film tells the tale of human evolution. The film starts with apes who are fighting each other, they go to sleep then wake up and there is a mysterious black monolith in the middle of them, after this one of them discovers the use of bone clubs as weapons, the monolith signified a stage in evolution. It then flashes to the future where another one of these monoliths has been placed on then moon; to signify the evolution of man to the point of travelling their. The film is then a race between the human character “Bowman” and the computer “Hal” to reach the monolith.

5. A Clockwork Orange Protagonist Alex is an "ultraviolent" youth in futuristic Britain. As with all luck, his eventually runs out and he's arrested and convicted of murder and rape. While in prison, Alex learns of an experimental program in which convicts are programmed to detest violence. If he goes through the program his sentence will be reduced and he will be back on the streets sooner than expected. But Alex's ordeals are far from over once he hits the mean streets of Britain that he had a hand in creating.

6. “1984” 1984 is a film based on the novel by George Orwell. The film follows a man who lives in a totalitarian state where people are constantly viewed by “Big Brother” and are restricted from having human quality's often referred to as “thought crime”. This is a community who live in constant fear of terrorist attacks which are infact made by the government and used as a way to control them. The film was made in 1984

7. Brazil Sam Lowry is a harried technocrat in a futuristic society that is needlessly convoluted and inefficient. He dreams of a life where he can fly away from technology and overpowering bureaucracy, and spend eternity with the woman of his dreams. While trying to rectify the wrongful arrest of one Harry Buttle, Lowry meets the woman he is always chasing in his dreams, Jill Layton. Meanwhile, the bureaucracy has fingered him responsible for a rash of terrorist bombings, and both Sam and Jill's lives are put in danger.

8. Men In Black Men and black which follows two members of a top-secret organisation created to police alien activity on earth, named agent Kay and Jay. The film shows these two battling against an intergalactic terrorist whose goal is to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies. In order to prevent intergalactic war they must track down the terrorist and prevent the destruction of earth.

9. Equilibrium In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Bale) is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. Whe he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.

Inception Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

11. Trailer analysis The advert starts with a flying sorcer style spaceship flying towards the screen. Then a whooshing sound as a fireball type animation flys towards the screen, then come in the introduction writing “today man prepares to take his first step outward into space” etc.. As this sequence begins some very dramatic music comes in. Then it calms down and the title “Forbidden planet” goes into the middle of the screen and then zooms towards the viewer. Then it has a sequence of clips introducing all the characters with narration. It shows all of the modern for there time effects and brags about them. It then cuts to dramatic music with the words “far” “and” “away” and then the main title again “forbidden planet” and then it has the main cast written on the screen, and then it ends.

12. Trailer analysis It starts with a sun set on earth with narration “saying millions of year ago before the human race existed an adventure began” etc...

Trailer Analysis A Clockwork Orange The trailer starts with Beethoven music in a modern electronic sped up tempo style, with flashing images and different words, such as exciting comic and bizarre. The flashing images show a lot of random parts from the film containing a lot of violence an disturbing images. It then ends on the title of the film with flashing colour in the background.

Trailer analysis 1984 (George Orwell) The film starts with the film company logo and a backing track that starts with the vocal "sex crime" which is repeated over and over, this quote is very fitting to the theme of the film, which is based on the concept of thought and sex crimes that is explored in the main characters relationship with a woman. The music in my opinion portrays the landscape of Orwell's dystopia, the type of robotic style pop music you would hear if you turned on the radio in Oceania. Unlike the other adverts this one’s music and intensity remains pretty stable throughout. Also in contrast to the other adverts it has narration that describes the films story in detail which does not leave much enigma for the audience to ponder, it uses this technique in hoping the storyline will interest the audience enough in its plainest form to make them want to go see it. All the shots show the grim environment the main character lives in with shots of a rally which is Nazi esc, with a dictator giving a speech. It’s the authority in the film and their control over the people.

15. Trailer analysis Brazil The trailer starts with the black screen with the writing "tomorrow was another day". the main character is at his work and it has a voice over saying "the rules here are laid down, we all have to play by them", this is significant in that this is a main theme in the film about the amount of control the state has over the people. Short inserts of speech keep playing al referring to a person named "Sam Rowlie", the footage is following the main character who is him. as the advert builds up more and more of the Brazil theme music play until it reaches a point where footage changes from black and white to colour. everything is seems relatively calmly and dream like until the screen goes black and official police type characters break into his room and their unfolds a very surreal compilation of shots including huge sections of countryside literally lifting into the air. This sequence also involves lots of explosions; this all promotes a feeling of hastiness. As this second sequence of shots carries on the music is more lively and intense. The sequence ends with a shot of the main character and another man, the man says to him "do us all a favour and stay away" and then the main title "Brazil" comes up, then it fades out with the music. The enigma in is trailer is the question were left thinking "why is this all happening to main character".

16. Trailer analysis Equilibrium The trailer starts with the film company "dimensions" logo. it then moves onto flashing of The beginning credits with a hit sound every time a new title comes up. it then has a falling Down shot of the main character from above, the hit sound keeps going on until it builds up and gets more intense until the name of the film "equilibrium" comes up and there’s a Brief moment of silence. Then there’s a shot of police swat style characters breaking through a window with music accompanying them. The music becomes more fast and fast until it breaks out into a catchy song which fits with the main character fighting with his enemies in a highly choreographed manner; this carries on until the main character shoots at the screen and the title "equilibrium fades in". The main aspects in this trailer that are typical of the genre(which I would generalise as being action) is the gaining in tempo of music and general pace of the footage with shot transitions gaining speed etc. This advert strays away from the theme of theme that is "thought crime" and the police state, this theme is why I’m studying this film. In that the teaser doesn’t give away much though creates enigma which is typical of teaser trailers.
