  1. FLIGHT LESSON 5 - EXERCISE 10a SLOW FLIGHT AIRMANSHIP: L kout, Ts & Ps (low airspeed - reduced cooling), height above the surface. Power available P o w e r Power required Slow flight region Airspeed AIM: To acquaint you with the handling characteristics and control feel at low airspeeds. DEPARTURE: Runway:___________ Crosswind:___________ Operating area:______________________ Altitude:____________ Any attempt to regain lost altitude by raising the nose will result in a rapid increase of induced drag and without an increase in power the airspeed will fall. No altitude will be gained and continued raising of the nose will only result in altitude being lost and evenually the aircraft will reach the stall. Level flight a. Estimate pwr required for VS1 + 10Kts. b. Reduce power. c. Adopt attitude. e. Trim. f. Re-adjust power to maintain altitude. g. Re-adjust attitude to maintain speed. h. Maintain altitude, heading and balance. Climbing flight a. Nominate rate of climb. b. Gradually increase power whilst maintaining airspeed heading and balance. c. Stabilise power when nominated rate of climb is acheived. e. Trim. h. Maintain rate of climb, heading and balance. Descending flight a. Nominate rate of descent. b. Gradually decrease power whilst maintaining airspeed heading and balance. c. Stabilise power when nominated rate of descent is acheived. e. Trim. h. Maintain rate of descent, heading and balance. Turning a. Lookout. b. Roll on bank whilst increasing power. c. Centralise ailerons. d. Adjust attitude. e. Maintain airspeed & altitude. EMERGENCIES Action in the event of cockpit fire i. Fire extinguisher--------------------------As required ii Fresh air vents-----------------------------Open iii. Radio----------------------------------------Emergency call Squawk 7700 BCF Fire extinguishers give off toxic fumes, use only sufficient extinguishant then ventilate cockpit. Action in the event of fumes in the cockpit i. Cockpit hot air-----------------------------Off ii Fresh air vents-----------------------------Open iii. Instruments---------------------------------Check for signs of malfunction If smell electrical carry out electrical fire checks. If smell is petrol, do not make any electrical selection as a spark could lead to fire. Land as soon as possible. Action in the event of engine fire during flight Shut down using FIREchecks: Fuel--------------------- Fuel pump off Fuel cock off Throttle closed Mixture to idle cut off Ignition----------------- Magnetos off Radio------------------- Emergency call Consider squawk 7700 Electric's--------------- Master off Alternator off If fire is not extinguished, sideslip to keep flames from cockpit. Carry out forced landing. Action in the event of electrical fire i. Master switch------------------------------Off ii Alternator----------------------------------Off iii. Circuit breakers---------------------------Trip all Land as soon as possible.
