Reasons for Movements • to establish their identities • to defend their rights and privileges • to present their grievances • to ensure their survival
Ethnic Movements • Majority of societies today are multiethnic or multicultural • Most have minority groups who don’t have full rights • Ethnic tensions and movements have become a major source of violent and non-violent conflicts • 75% of on-going conflicts are ethnic based

Biafra Secessionist Movement • Wanted freedom from Nigeria • Had civil war with Nigeria • Some countries saw Biafra as independent • France would send them materials • United Kingdom and Soviet Union supplied Nigeria with arms • Mortality ranged from 500,000- several million dead
