VSR-1 & VSR-2: Very Short Reach OC-192 Interfaces

Learn about VSR-1 and VSR-2 interfaces, which offer Very Short Reach optical connectivity at different distances and cost levels. Discover the multi-vendor interoperability testing conducted by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) and the benefits of these interfaces for routing and optical transport networks.

  1. VSR-1 & VSR-2: Very Short Reach OC-192 Interfaces Russ Tuck tuck@pluris.com OIF: PLL WG chair Pluris: Systems Architect

  2. Outline • Background • VSR-1: parallel optics, 300m, likely lowest cost • VSR-2: reduced-cost SR-1, 600m, SMF • Multi-vendor Interoperability Testing

  3. VSR-1 & VSR-2 are OIF IA’s • OIF: Optical Internetworking Forum • 300+ member companies • Carriers, Equipment Vendors, & Component Vendors • Routing and optical transport vendors • IA’s: Implementation Agreements (not standards) • PLL: Physical and Link Layer Working Group • VSR: Very Short Reach SONET (POS) Interfaces • Lower cost • Framer interfaces • OC-192 IA’s are in products now: SFI-4, SPI-4 (phase 1 & 2) • Busy with OC-768 • UNI: User Network Interface (In Development) • Router to optical transport network

  4. DWDM DWDM OXC WAN Router Core Router Access Router Host Router/switch Web Server Web Server Customers Peering partners Internet exchange Web Server Potential VSR links (in red)

  5. VSR IF VSR IF OIF-VSR4-01.0: VSR-1 • 12 fibers @ 1.25 Gb/s (GigE speed) • 850nm VCSEL lasers • 2 multi-mode fiber (MMF) ribbons (Tx, Rx) • 300m with 4 connectors (1 patch panel) • 62.5μm core MMF, same as guaranteed for 500m GigE • 400MHz.km modal bandwidth • MTP™ (MPO) connectors Patch Panel

  6. Error on any data channel is detected by CRC check. Bad channel’s data block is reconstructed from Protection (parity) channel and good channels If channels are reversed (ribbon flipped), logic detects and compensates automatically. FEC included because easy – probably not needed Data: encoded & striped over 10 fibers Protection: parity (xor) of 10 data fibers Error Detection Channel (EDC): CRC of each fiber Built-in Forward Error Correction (FEC)

  7. OIF-VSR4-02.0: VSR-2 • 1 fiber at 10 Gb/s • 1310nm edge-emitting FP lasers • Eventually also VCSELs • 2 single-mode fibers (SMF) (Tx, Rx) • 600m – dispersion limited, 4dB loss budget • Based on ITU-T G.691 • Allows more dispersion than SR-1 • Shorter reach • Easier to manufacture

  8. VSR-1 Transponder Module Compatible with OIF SFI-4 electrical interface to framer. Parallel optics are available from multiple suppliers: pin compatible & interoperable. Field termination kits are being developed for ribbon fiber. TX Optics VSRC ASIC 300pin Connector MTP™ (MPO) connectors 2.5” 4” RX Optics

  9. MSA Compatible Compatible with 300-pin MSA modules for 2-80km: connector, pin-out, size, mounting, etc. Mounting Holes 300pin connector OC-192 SR OC-192 VSR Back side of transponders.

  10. Multiple System Vendor Interoperability ~ 28 hour test Zero errors BER < 1E-16 6 fiber segments VSR-1 testing at the maximum link distance (300m) Ribbon fiber routed same as SMF 300 meter ribbon fiber spools CIENACore Director Cisco GSR router

  11. Multiple System Vendor Interoperability 12x1.25G VSR Interface was tested at max link length • 300m over 6 sections of fiber and five connectors Results: • Demonstrated compliance with OIF spec • Optical performance verified • Link protection capability verified • Demonstrated router to switch link with zero errors • ~ 28 hour test, BER < 1E-16 • Demonstrated multiple vendor system interoperability • Demonstrated multi-component vendor interoperability • parallel optics from multiple vendors

  12. Link Protection Testing Link Protection was demonstrated by breaking individual fibers, simulating single element failures - zero bit errors reported

  13. VSR-1 < 100m Spec: 0 - 300m Install patch cable Lowest cost interface VSR-2 > 300m Spec: 0 - 600m Use existing SMF Most like SR-1 Selection criteria
