  1. Lateral Ankle Ligaments

  2. Lateral Ligament Sprain • Lateral ligaments (calcaneofibularand anterior/posterior talofibular ligaments) are weaker than MEDIAL ligaments so INVERSION sprains are more common than EVERSION sprains!

  3. Lateral Ligament Sprain • Most common ankle injury • MOI = Inversion and plantar flexion • Ankle sprain wrapping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAfMArBFBNI&feature=related

  4. Lateral Ligament Sprain • Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATF) is injured first. (mild sprain) • The Calcaneofibular Ligament (CF) is injured in more severe sprains • The Posterior Talofibular Ligament is injured in the most severe sprains

  5. Peroneal Tendon Injury • Can occur when lateral ankle ligaments are injured • Common problems are dislocation of tendons over lateral malleolus or peroneal tendonitis

  6. Medial Ligament Sprain:Deltoid Ligament • Deltoid ligament sprain is associated with EVERSION.

  7. Medial Ligament Sprain(Deltoid Ligament) • Often associated with fractures of lateral malleolus (of FIBULA) • Eversion Sprain • If force continues, the deltoid ligament is stretched and torn

  8. Achilles Tendon • Tear to Achilles Tendon is a sprain or a strain?

  9. Plantar Fascia • Plantar Fascia supports the arch of the foot

  10. Palpating the Plantar Fascia
