Phi Beta EpsilonVision 2020 Renewing the Brotherhood in the 21st Century Reunion, 2006
Current Issues from the PBE Corp Perspective • Near Term • Vibrant active brotherhood • Finances stable • Reputation strong • Physical plant sufficient • Long Term • Aging house (last renewed 1970) • Changing physical surroundings • Evolution of MIT student body • Evolving FSILG climate
Vision 2020: Long Term Planning from Strength • A process to separate long term planning form short term operations • Dialog with actives, alums, MIT to define long term problems • Planning to identify actions • Fund Raising to support necessary expenditures • All over a multi year period
Areas of Review • Survey of Active Body • West Campus physical/technology environment • Evolution of MIT Student Body • FSILG environment
Results of FSILG Focus Groups with Actives (spring ’06) • Reasons for Joining: Comfort/friendship/connection established with current members; convenience; tradition • Pledge Education: Considered strong but “hardest” of other fraternities • Physical Plant: Adequate but needs improvement; cleaning, floor, repairs are issues; kitchen, social space well liked • Image: Diverse in background and interests; some concern about being seen as arrogant or exclusive • Finances: dues low, meals high • Alumni relations: Active alums greatly appreciated; additional input appreciated, for example around career development • GPA: on low end among FSILG’s; interest in improved academic/tutoring programs
West Campus Physical Environment-Dorms • Dorm room fees to increase to cover full cost • Graduate housing expanding Warehouse, Sidney-Pacific, Albany-Pacific 2008 • Ashdown graduates move to Albany-Pacific • Ashdown to be used as undergraduate swing space as one dorm at a time renovated
West Campus Physical Environment-FSILGs • MIT studying locations for 6-10 new chapter houses on campus • Interested FSILGs are sororities w/o houses and fraternities in Boston • Possible locations: Memorial Drive, Mass Ave, Vassar St, Albany St • Probably multiple scattered lots rather than on big lot which would be highly valued for other purposes • The competitive advantage of our location may erode
Evolution of MIT Student Body • 50/50 male/female • Students (parents) more concerned with quality of housing, recreation, campus per Admissions Office survey • Entering freshman class will expand from 1000 to 1100 • Anticipate in depth dialog with Admissions Office
FSILG Environment • Active AILG • Treasurer 101 and House Manager 101 • Updated House Manager’s Manual • Safety Licensing Inspection program • Accreditation • FSILG Coop
FSILG Environment • More MIT Support • Aurora Report identified FSILG situation and needs • IRDF Construction loans • IRDF Operating grants
Elements of 2006-07 Activity • Review situation in four key issue areas (Corp., actives, volunteers) • Report on facts and issues (special PBE News, website, other?) • Discussion/working groups (written feed back, Founders’ Day, Reunion 2007)
Approximate Timeline • 2006-2007 Academic Year: Evaluate fraternity and environment; identify issues • 2007-2008 Dialog and Planning on action plans • 2008-2010 Fund Raising, detailed professional planning, implementation as possible • Do it right, not necessarily quickly
Reunion 2006 Kickoff • Collect alumni ideas • Identify communication processes • Identify resources • We need volunteers • Working groups on planning issues • Potential fund raising
