  3. What good readers do: • Make connections between prior knowledge and the text. • Ask questions of the text and the author. • Visualize. • Make inferences (opinions, generalizations, conclusions). • Determine the important ideas. • Synthesize the information. • Repair their own understanding.

  4. SCHEDULE • 3-Way Rotation • ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Comprehension Toolkit

  5. ELAR Objectives • Word Study – understanding spelling, word origins, and word meaning • Shared Reading – read and understand grade level text, use literary elements to comprehend and analyze texts, analyze the author’s craft • Responding to Text – respond to a variety of literary sources – orally or written • Independent Reading – choose texts and read independently for a period of time • Writing – plan, develop, revise, edit, and publish written works • Writing – informational, narrative, opinion, letter writing • Research – research, plan and present information

  6. Building critical thinkers • Make connections between the text and the real world • Identify and understand the different structures of texts • Understand the author’s craft • Analyze characters and their changes • Understand and explain the message or theme of a text • Make inferences

  7. Vocabulary, Vocabulary, Vocabulary • Reading is important to everything your child will do. • A student’s reading comprehension improves as their vocabulary skills improve. • Vocabulary skills can improve just by reading.

Math Objectives • Math • Numbers from the hundredths place to the billions place • Fractions, equivalent fractions and mixed numbers; adding and subtracting like denominators • Add & Subtract whole number and decimals up to the hundredths place • Multiply two-digit by two digit numbers • Division up to a three-digit dividend • Rounding/Estimating • Use patterns to multiply by 10 and 100 • Geometric lines, angles, classifying triangles by angles, properties of quadrilaterals • Measurement including length, capacity, weight, mass, volume, time, temperature, perimeter and area • Data representations on a dot plot, frequency table, stem and leaf plot • Personal financial literacy- purposes of banks, calculating profit

  10. Math • How can I help my 4th grader in math?? • Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division routinely. Can use dice or playing cards to generate numbers for them to use. • Use a recipe to find connections to fractions/mixed numbers and to gain experience using appropriate capacity measurements. • Telling time and finding how much time has elapsed between events in your daily life. • Look through shopping ads to find connections between decimals and money, fractions. • As you drive, ask your child to find examples of the different types of lines or angles. (Parallel or perpendicular line; acute, right, obtuse angles) • Multiplication facts-ask your child how to use grid paper to find all their facts! Practice having them create and use this handy tool. • Visit teacher webpages through the SISD website to find links to useful additional practice.
