  1. MS - Project “Identification and implementation of adaptation response measures in Drini-Mati River Delta (DRMD)” National Conference , Tirana , 3 - 4 November 2011 Integrated Monitoring Programme in DMRD Prof.As. Ferdinant Bego Prof. As. Vangjel Mustaqi

  2. Content • Goal and objectives • Elements selected to be monitored as part of DMRD monitoring system • Theme of Indicators and Sub-indicators or parameters • Monitoring stations • Data processing and archiving

  3. Goal and objectives The main goal of this monitoring program is: • to organize a monitoring system able to evaluate the status and the trends of climate elements, • to measure impacts of climate change on the coastal and estuarine ecosystem and its components, • to identify the human influence on coastal and estuarine ecology, and help with proper decision making to protect, rehabilitate and mitigate those impacts • Determination of more significative parameters and indicators that should be measured and their frequency. • Establishing of a database necessary for an integral and sustainable administration of ecosystem

  4. Criteria for selecting elements and issues to be monitored Projection and establishing of monitoring network of DMRD keep in mind: • Hydrometeorological characteristics of DMRD area • Biodiversity characteristic of DMRD area. • Choosing of most effective methodology of observation and sampling. • Using of update methods of analysis. • To be part of a chain (Pressure → State → Response)

  5. Theme of Indicators and parameters • The main themes of indicators to be parameters of DMRD Monitoring system area: • Meteorological: Air pressure, temperature and humidity, precipitation, wind (velocity and its direction), solar radiation • Hydrological: Sea water level, water level and discharge of the rivers, ground water level, water changing sea-lagoon regime. • Physical: Temperature; conductivity and transparency, total Suspended solids. • Chemical: pH; acidity; alkalinity; dissolved oxygen; COD; BOD5; nitrogen (NH4, NO2, NO3); phosphorus; total organic carbon; Heavy metal, organic substances and pesticides. • Hydrobiological: Phytoplacton, Phytobenthos, Zooplancton, Zoobenthos Fish • Biodiversity: Habitats (at the beginning 3-5 priority habitats) Priority species (plants and animals, including alien species) Phenological changes in selected plant and animal species

  6. Monitoring stations • Meteorological Stations One meteorological station situated approximately in the middle of this zone (Shenkoll) is sufficient. But meteorological data from marine station placed in the Shengjini harbor will be used • Hydrological monitoring • River stations: In two stream gauging sites for each river • Marine stations Two marine stations are sufficient to monitor sea level. These stations will be equipped by an automatic water level station and a classic hydrometer. • Ground water stations Two ground water stations along this zone are sufficient . For this purpose can be used wells in house yards. • Lagoon stations One water level monitoring station for each lagoon is necessary.

  7. Biodiversity Monitoring • Monitoring of Habitats Monitoring of habitats will be focused on habitat types. The first year will serve to establish the baseline data • Monitoring of Flora Monitoring program related to flora will focus on two issues: monitoring of changes in plant phenology and monitoring of invasive (alien) plant species, that might profit from the climate changes to further spread out in the DMRD area. • Monitoring of Fauna • Monitoring of Birds (i) changes in wintering water birds, changes in breeding birds and, changes in species phenology • Monitoring of Mammalsbats (Chiroptera) and otter (Lutra lutra) • Monitorimi i Reptileve dhe AmfibeveMarine turtles, Terrestrial reptiles, Amphibians • Monitoring of fish catch • Monitoring of Insects

  8. Monitoring stations • Hydrometeorological stations • Hydrological stations • Hydrobiological stations • Biodiversity stations (habitats, priority species, including invasive/alien species) • Phenological stations
