Developments in service delivery • In line with national HPA expectations we have introduced new ways of working across the South West • Completed the merger of two HPUs into HPA (SW) South • The team based at Dartington moved to new base in Exeter • Established Acute Response Centres (ARC) in Brockworth and Exeter to coordinate response for the two units • Dorset and Cornwall satellite offices support the work of the ARC in Exeter • Current indications that these structures will be maintained into PHE
Impact on learning and development • Benefits of the ARC: • Greater volume of cases and outbreaks • On-site senior supervision at all times • Space provided for trainees in the ARC Currently evaluating the North ARC as a learning environment for trainees
Impact on learning and development – Improve consistency between HPUs in providing training: • Health protection section of the Public Health Training Policy, includes: • Induction section • Pre-placement assessment of learning needs • Formative assessment of competence throughout placement • Standardised summative assessment of competence prior to starting or resuming on-call duties • Evaluation of the placement • Repository for trainee projects
Impact on learning and development – Improve consistency between HPUs in providing training: • Planning to undertake a survey of access to health protection CPD through the health protection transition sub-group • Use findings to develop a CPD programme and promote uptake through use of modern technology • Health protection page on the SW public health training scheme website
Opportunities for health protection CPD • The HPA South West provides training for public health staff in various ways including: • Local clinical or on-call tutorials • Stonehouse Seminar monthly teleconferenced seminar • Annual regional update in Taunton • Short course programme: • Principles and practice of health protection 26 – 29 March 2012 at Canynge Hall, Bristol. • Applied health protection 30 March 2011 at Canynge Hall, Bristol. • Applied field epidemiology 29 Nov – 1 December at Canynge Hall, Bristol • Principles and practice of health protection Autumn 2011 at Plymouth Medical School • Communicable disease module, University of the West of England, MSc in Public Health • Working in the Acute Response Centres • Emergency planning and response exercises • On-line training, e.g. Emergency response and immunisation
