World War I1914 - 1918 Mizell, Tubbs, Hatling
Essential Question • How did new technology make WWI different from past wars?
Tactics and Warfare Prior to WWI (1914) • Marched in lines – mass fire • Used rifle-muskets (about 2-3 shots per minute)
Tactics and Warfare before the 1900s • Video Clip – Gods and Generals • Battle of Manassas (1861), American Civil War • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxX4Bo6yG38
Guns • Machine Gun • Perfect defensive weapon • Very rapid fire (hundreds of bullets per minute) • Bolt action rifles • What the ordinary soldier had • 4 – 10 bullets per clip
Artillery • Long range weapons that could deliver devastating blows on the enemy • Shells could be as heavy as 900 lbs • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O85XWjLVxRA
Airplanes • Primarily used for reconnaissance (spying) • Could have machine guns or bombs • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go0LprJwxaw
Poison Gas • Tear Gas, Chlorine Gas • Attacks the nerves, eyes, throat • Wear gas mask for protection • Mustard Gas • Makes skin blister, eyes sore, vomit • This gas was heavier than air and sunk into the trenches • Gas mask did not help • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV5Wq0vMZnw
Submarines • “A ship underwater” • Germany will use these to great affect: U-boats • Launch torpedoes at enemy ships • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fCIsQT_jCg
Zeppelins • Could carry 4,000 – 5,000 lbs of bombs • Abandoned because they were easy targets • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfUaw0BfaZA
Tanks • Most innovative development of the war • Created in order to break the stalemate and go through the trenches • Did not reach full potential • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCsldbh9hAY
Tactics and Warfare Change in WWI • Video Clip – All Quiet on the Western Front • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXtsiqrhqsU • Pay attention to the weapons used and how/where soldiers fight
What differences did you see? • Where/How they fought? • What did they use to fight?
Tactics and Warfare Change in WWI • Fighting in Trenches • Protection from new technology • No longer marching in lines • Using machine guns
