WORLD WAR I 1914-1918. Causes of the War. Imperialism- “big guy” tries to become more powerful by taking advantage of “little guy” Nationalism- thinking you (your country) deserves better treatment than others. Militarism- “might makes right” the bully is stronger so his ideas are right.

Why did the U.S. join this mess? • German U-boat sunk the Lusitania • W. Wilson wanted to stay out , but had to help Britain after the sinking of the Lusitania • April 1917- Wilson asks Congress to delcare war on Germany

New Weapons • Machine guns • poisonous gases • airplanes • tanks • fighting from trenches

US did not let women fight women took over jobs left by men Katherine Stinson raised money for the Red Cross by flying across America 1920- 19th amendment to let women vote some said “it was the greatest thing to come out of the war. Women in the War
CHANGES AT HOME • President Wilson set up the Food Administration and made farmers plant more food • farming was difficult in Europe • Americans started “Victory Gardens” • Set up Fuel Administration to make people conserve coal and oil
THE WAR ENDS Nov. 11, 1918 • Germans finally gave up • League of Nations- group of countries who agree to work problems peacefully • Congress thought US should just remain in isolation and not join • Treaty of Versailles ended the war
