  1. ATLAS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH 2011- June 21 Coordinators: Michael Barnett and Steven Goldfarb Outreach Officer: Claudia Marcelloni

  2. TOPICS • Videos about Dijet Analyzes to NJP • Plans for the ATLAS visitor center; including a new presentation for guides  • Report on the event "Be a Scientist for a Day" organized by CERN • Video for the project "Passport Big Bang” • Art of ATLAS in Stockholm  • ATLAS pop-up French version (Emma Sanders) c.marcelloni

  3. DIJET ANALYZES TO NJP • An ATLAS paper on searches for new physics in dijet final states was accepted for publication by New Journal of Physics • The publication has the tradition to (optionally) accompany their publications with additional  material targeted to the public. This material includes a short easily-accessible summary of  the paper and of its importance, and a video where (some of) the authors describe the main  results of the paper.      • Under Erez Etzion guidance, as chair of the paper EdBoard, and the participation of Adam Gibson, Frederik Ruehr and Georgios Choudalakis, we produced 2 videos; one aiming the public of NJP and the other the general public c.marcelloni

  4. VIDEO FOR NJP The convener and team that published the ATLAS Dijet Paper at the New Journal of Physics, took on board the c.marcelloni • http://iopscience.iop.org/1367-2630

  8. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE ATLAS VISITOR CENTER (AVC) • The AVC will pass through a renovation in 3 phases as described below: • Phase 01 – immediate action • Web page – have all the information related to the AVC available at the collaboration page • Visit Organization – visits originated by the collaboration with more than 4 people are organized by the ATLAS secretariat; visits originated by the wide public are organized by the CERN visits service • Guides & training – call for new ATLAS guides and new training procedure • Update AVC content –improve hardware, software and content including a new presentation for guides • Daily maintenance – CERN visits service through 16 89 97 • Phase 02 - Development of the path between the Globe and ATLAS • Phase 03 - Renew the AVC in collaboration with Rolf Landua’s committee for the other sites on the CERN visits itinerary, including CCC, SM18 and CERN computing center c.marcelloni

  10. CERN IN THE COMMUNITY • "Be a scientist for a day”: • The project "Dans la peau d’un chercheur aimed to educate primary school students in the experimental method. • Thirty classes of children aged 10 to 12 from the Pays de Gex and Canton of Geneva were registered • In February and March each class received boxes that they could not open, containing undefined objects. The students had to speculate, propose and carry out experiments to deduce what was in the box.In April and May the students visited the Experiments at CERN • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2011/06/News%20Articles/1324554?ln=en • danslapeaudunchercheur.web.cern.ch/danslapeaudunchercheur/ c.marcelloni

  14. PASSPORT BIG BANG • Ten podiums will be installed at the sites of the LHC accelerator allowing visitors to explore what is behind the metal gates of CERN • The course will be accompanied by a puzzle to complete the Passport Big Bang • The map and passport will be available at Geneva tourist office, town halls in the region and at the CERN reception • http://passeportbigbang.web.cern.ch/passeportbigbang/ c.marcelloni

  18. THE ART OF ATLAS:For institutes to contact local museums A multimedia installation combining photos and film about ATLAS physicists was seen for more than 10.000 visitors at the Birmingham Science Museum from mid October 2010 until Jan 2011. The simple format of 4 projections can be adapted for any space. The University of Stokholm will be the next to host it from September 2011 to Feb 2012 c.marcelloni http://www.atlas.ch/multimedia-installation.html
