King Mahendra Trust for Nature ConservationANNAPURNA CONSERVATION AREA PROJECT • The first conservation area and largest protected area in Nepal. ACAP covers 7,629 km2 over 5 districts with 56 Village Development Committees. • The most popular trekking destination in Nepal. • Very rich in natural and cultural heritage. • Capacity to become financially self-sustainable.
King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION CENTER • Built on work of Nepal Conservation Research and Training Center (NCRTC) since 1989. • To expand the scope of work of NCRTC to make it a regional research and training center, it was named BCC. • At present, implementing the 1st Landscape level project in the country.
King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation BARDIA CONSERVATION PROGRAM • Started as a satellite project to monitor translocated rhinoceros in RBNP. • Was made a regular project “Bardia Conservation Program” in 1995 • Has a strong student training component in its program. • RSWR extension program being supervised by BCP.
King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation CENTRAL ZOO • Handed over by the Government to KMTNC for management on Dec. 29, 1995. • Provides excellent opportunity for ex-situ conservation. • Strong conservation education focus, especially for urban school students. • Limited space the main limitation for expansion.
King Mahendra Trust for Nature ConservationMANASLU CONSERVATION AREA PROJECT • The second ‘conservation area’ under the management of KMTNC. • Extremely remote and neglected area. • Could have high eco-tourism potential. • The region is also rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation SUKLAPHANTA CONSERVATION PROGRAM • Started in 2003 to monitor rhino and tiger population in the reserve. • Home to the largest herd of Swamp deer in Nepal. • Has been working in the buffer zone concentrating on DAGs, Janajatis, dalits and women to improve their livelihood options.
