What is a homonym? • A homonym is a word that sounds the same as another word, but has a different spelling and a different meaning. • For example – to – two - too

Your vs You're • The word your shows possession (ownership). Example: Those are your dirty shoes. • The word you’re is a contraction. (A contraction is when you combine two words using an apostrophe.) You’re is a contraction of the words you and are. Example: You’re always late for dinner.
There vs Their vs They’re • There: a place (It is over there ) Hint– refers to location - think of ‘here’ or ‘there’.) Used with are – there are (There are two bikes.) • Their: possessive form of they (Their books are red.) • They’re: means they are (They’re going home.)
Principal vs Principle • Principal – the leader of a school. Example: Mr. Z is the principal of Salk Middle School. …remember – the principal is your pal. • Principle - morals, ethics Example: I believe that a person with strong principles will always do the right thing. Hint – Principles are rules to live by.
Effect Vs. Affect • The rain affected my hairdo. • Definition of Affect: an influence • The rain had no effect on my hairdo. • Definition of effect- to cause Hint- VANE ( Verb- Affect, Noun- Effect)
Accept vs. Except • Accept- Mark is hoping that he gets accepted into college for the fall semester. • Except- Everyone is going to the party except me. My parents will not allow me! Hint! The ‘X’ means no!
Whole vs. Hole I can’t believe you ate the whole pizza. There is a hole in the bottom of my shoe.
It’s vs Its • The park changed its policy – we are not allowed to play there after dark. Its relates ‘policy’ to ‘park’. • It’s a shame that you can not play in the park after dark. It’s means ‘it is’.
Were vs Where Were and Where are not homonyms, but they are easily confused by some writers. • Where are all of you going? Where refers to the location that someone or something is at or going to. • We were just going out to get something to eat – do you want to come with us? Were is the past tense of ‘to be’.
Desert vs Dessert The man and his camel wandered lost, in the burning sun of the desert for many days. However, when he was finally rescued, the first thing he asked for was dessert! Desert – A hot dry place Dessert – A tasty treat after a meal Hint – you’ll want doubles – so use two ‘s’!
