In 1907, J. Bruce Ismay (President of the White Star Line) and Lord Pirrie (Chairman of Harland & Wolff shipbuilders) dreamed up the idea to build luxurious ocean liners as a way for the White Star Line to compete in the transatlantic passenger market. From that idea, the luxury liner Titanic was designed and built.
The Titanic, a part of the White Star Line, was owned by the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, located in England.

Titanic's four funnels were constructed away from the site and were then transported to the shipyard, where they were installed on the Titanic. Only three of the funnels were used to expel smoke and waste gasses. The fourth was added to make the ship look more powerful.
Titanic was completed and ready to sail from Belfast to Southampton, on April 1, 1912.
THE LOOKOUT Frederick Fleet was in the last half hour of his watch from the crows nest when he saw a massive iceberg no more than 500 yards away. Fleet phoned the bridge and shouted, "Iceberg right ahead!".
At 11:40 p.m. on April 14,1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg. The iceberg made a 90 meter gash along the side of the ship, below the water line..
The first lifeboat launched, Lifeboat #7, was lowered at 12:45 a.m., on the starboard side, with only 28 people onboard, out of a maximum capacity of 65.
Almost two hours after the Titanic sank, RMS Carpathia, commanded by Captain Henry Rostron, arrived on the scene and picked up its first survivors at 4:10 AM.
It probably took Titanic about 15 minutes to sink to her final resting place on the ocean floor. That means that Titanic sank at a rate of 10 miles per hour (or 16 km per hour).
The Titanic’s final resting place is 12,460 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
There were 2,206 people on board the Titanic. A total of 705 were rescued by the crew of the Carpathia. Hundreds of people were unable to get into the lifeboats, and most of them perished in the freezing cold sea. At final count, 1,501 people lost their lives in the Titanic disaster.
