  1. Welcome (back) Students will be able to explain how they will be successful in English 10, show understanding of classroom policies and procedures, and be able to list at least 3 of the 8 ways to be a successful speaker.

  2. Daily Opener • On a pink opener sheet, write about 5 things you will do in order to be successful in this class.

  3. What I think it takes to be successful in this class: • Being here, being ready • Not interrupting (me or the learning environment) • Doing your work every day • Asking for help when you need it • Being positive and helping others • Syllabus • Read and discuss • Questions?

  4. The American Speech • In Collins Type 1 format, write for about 3 minutes answering the following questions in detail. • Why do people give speeches? • What do you think are the characteristics of a great speech? • What makes a great speaker? • List on board and discuss

  5. Excerpts from “The 35 Greatest Speeches in History” TAKE NOTES- not word-for-word. For example, in point #1 how can you sum up the paragraph in your own words? • If a man wishes to become a great orator, he must first become a student of the great orators who have come before him. He must immerse himself in their texts, listening for the turns of phrases and textual symmetries, the pauses and crescendos, the metaphors and melodies that have enabled the greatest speeches to stand the test of time. • [The greatest] speeches lifted hearts in dark times, gave hope in despair, refined the characters of men, inspired brave feats, gave courage to the weary, honored the dead, and changed the course of history.

  6. In Order to be a Great Speaker 1. Be Yourself It's great to watch other successful speakers, to see what they do and how they do it. To be a great speaker in your own right requires you to develop your own style, to speak using your own voice. Be yourself when you speak and you can't help but be successful. 2. Be Bold You might think that it takes boldness just to stand up and start talking, and it does, but there are plenty of speakers out there who come across like timid mice. Be bold as a speaker, confident in your abilities. Practice every day, give speeches whenever you can. 3. Be different Successful speakers aren't like everybody else. There's something that sets them apart. Makes them stand out. They're the speakers who do more than just stand in the front of the room and talk at you. 4. Be funny (only when appropriate!!!) Successful speakers know how to be funny, that is: they know when and where to use humor in their presentations... and they aren't afraid to do so.

  7. In order to be a great speaker 5. Be engaging Listening to a speech is, for most people, a passive activity. Successful speakers involve their audiences and converse with them so that it's a conversation, not a talking-to. 6. Be positive No matter what the subject, successful speakers are always positive with their audiences. They help their audiences learn what to do as opposed to what NOT to do. They focus on the upside, not the downside. 7. Be challenging. Great speakers always challenge their audiences to do great things. And again, it doesn't matter what the subject. A successful speaker gives you the know-how and the challenge to make your life more enjoyable and more rewarding everyday. 8. Be Passionate. Great speakers care a great deal about the topic in which they are speaking. They use inflection, repetition, figurative language and other rhetorical devices (speaking devices) to make their point. They get loud, they get quiet, they pause, and whatever else it takes to move the audience. Remember, to be a great speaker you must appear brave, bold, and passionate, and move your audience in some way.

  8. Homework • This week, possibly tomorrow, you will be quizzed on what it takes to be a great speaker and the policies of this class. So read over your notes from today and be ready to put them to use soon! • Have your syllabus signed and turned in tomorrow.
