  2. A dictatorship is a government in which one individual, the dictator, exercises nearly unlimited authority over the lives of a country’s citizens. Power is often taken by violence. • Because of this there is no power through inheritance. • The dictator does not have to follow a country’s constitution. • He or she will generally rewrite the constitution to further their own agendas.

Continued Characteristics of a Dictatorship • Dictators consolidate executive, legislative, and judicial power in their own hands. • A single ruling political party often helps carry out the dictator’s orders. • Dictators rely on state-controlled media, secret police, and the military to maintain their power. • Religious freedom may not be allowed. • Social welfare programs may not exist, there is limited or no civil rights. • The government has a significant role in the economy.

  4. WHAT A DICTATORSHIP IS NOT • A democratic government which is by and for the people. • A government of shared power. Power is in the hands of the dictator. • A government which give the people civil rights.

THE BENEFITS OF A DICTATORSHIP • The dictator systemof authority can help in the advancement of a country by guiding the country’s resources toward a specific goal, such as modernization or industrialization. • Kind dictators can choose to use their power to improve the lives of their people. However, this has rarely happened throughout history.

PROBLEMS OF DICTATORSHIP • Dictatorships are unstable governments because they lack the consent of those people they govern. • Dictators subject their citizens to widespread suffering and loss of basic human rights. • Dictators often loot their national treasuries, leaving their countries bankrupt and their people destitute. • Dictators often target those who may speak against the regime, torturing or driving them into exile.
