2013 Working GroupMeeting Welcome and Overview Carolyn J. Lawrence USDA-ARS Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Unit
MaizeGDB’s Origins and Mission • 1920’s - Emerson began Maize Newsletter (MNL) • 1991 - MNL editor Ed Coe (USDA-ARS) systematized maize data into MaizeDB • 1998 - Walbot, Brendel, and others created ZmDB, a sequence database for the Maize Gene Discovery Project • 2001 - USDA-ARS charged Brendel with combining ZmDB and MaizeDB • 2003 - MaizeGDB (ZmDB + MaizeDB) went live • 2009 - MaizeGDB becomes sequence-centric (genome browser deployed) • 2012 - Functional genomics tools integrated (pathway tools, etc.) • 2013 - New interface (in process of deployment now) MaizeGDB’s goal is to provide a timely source of data and analysis tools that helps researchers to investigate the biology of maize, both as a research model and a crop.
