  3. Introducing Three Sectors

  4. Electronics Mission: The Electronics Sector Working Group is focused on creating scientifically grounded and transparent metrics for measuring and reporting environmental and social impacts of electronics. The sector is working to create these metrics using a life-cycle based platform and will be in an ISO-certifiable and index-ready format. Developing Sustainable Measurement & Reporting Standards. Prototypes include: Laptops, televisions

  5. What Electronics is DoingDeveloping SMRSs compliant with the ISO 14020series of standards through an open, multi-stakeholder process. What Electronics is Delivering A SMRS for each prototype and research to enhance better understanding of product impacts. How Electronics Benefits measurement& reporting of product sustainabilityCreates foundation for standardized productsustainability measurement and reporting: Business to business Business to retail Business to consumer Delivery, Benefits, and Opportunity Working Group Contact: Carole Mars • Carole.mars@asu.edu

  6. Food, Beverage & Agriculture Mission: The Food, Beverage & Agriculture Working Group works to build a consistent, practical and science based approach to sustainability assessment and information reporting that provides a foundation for fair competition, recognizes innovation, improves data quality and availability and ultimately improves the environmental, social and economic performance of the food and agricultural chain. Developing Sustainable Measurement & Reporting Standards. Prototypes include: Wheat Cereal, Flavored Yogurt, Fruit Juice

  8. Home & Personal Care Mission: The Home & Personal Care Working Group works to build a consistent, practical and life-cycle science based approach to product level sustainability information reporting for all home and personal care products. The group seeks to provide a foundation that fosters fair competition, recognizes true innovation, enhances data quality and availability and ultimately improves the environmental, social and economic performance of the entire home and personal care product industry. Developing Sustainable Measurement & Reporting Standards. Prototypes include: Laundry Detergent, Shampoo, Household Cleaner

  9. What Home & Personal Care is DoingDeveloping SMRSs compliant with the ISO 14020series of standards through an open, multi-stakeholder process. What Home & Personal Care is Delivering A SMRS for each prototype and research to enhance better understanding of product impacts. How Home & Personal Care Benefits measurement& reporting of product sustainabilityCreates foundation for standardized productsustainability measurement and reporting: Business to business Business to retailBusiness to consumer Delivery, Benefits, and Opportunity Working Group Contact: Joby Carlson • Joby.carlson@asu.edu

  10. Introducing Five ConsortiumWorking Groups

  11. Measurement Science Overview Mission: The Measurement Sciences Working Group is focused on establishing credible, accurate, and leading edge methods for characterizing the environmental and social impacts arising from the production of consumer goods. The group will examine accounting methodologies, impact categories, and reporting requirements for product category level measurement. Selecting Methodologies and Reporting Categories

  12. What Measurement Science is DoingEvaluating and establishing methodologies forSMRS developmentWhat Measurement Science is Deliveringto the SectorsUnderlying LCA methodologies for creatingbaseline models and defining impact categoriesHow Measurement Science Benefits SMRSSWG prioritizes product categories and facilitates the development of SMRSsMSWG and SWG collaborate to identify knowledge gaps and define future research needs Delivery, Benefits, and Opportunity Working Group Contact: Cash East • ceast@walton.uark.edu

  13. Consumer Science Mission: The Consumer Science Working Group works collaboratively to better understand the relationship between consumers and sustainable consumer products in terms of communication and consumer practices. Learning to Communicate and Change Consumer Practices

  14. Delivery, Benefits, and Opportunity • What Consumer Science is Doing • Consumer market research in parallel toConsortium and Sector developments • What Consumer Science is Delivering to the Sectors • Market research to inform SMRS development of consumer insights. • Market research to inform communicators aboutcommunication dimensions, trusted endorsers, messaging, and communication vehicles • How Consumer Science Benefits SMRS • Informs of consumer driven reporting categoriesand metrics Identifies education and awareness gaps • Makes an SMRS user-ready Working Group Contact: • Brittni Furrow • brittni.furrow@asu.edu

  15. Sustainable Systems Science Mission: The Sustainable Systems Working Group works to better understand the impact of the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry as a whole, rather than one particular product category, and examines the commonalities that exist within the life cycles of different consumer products. Identifying Common Fronts

  16. What Systems Science is Doing Exploring industry level impacts rather than product levelWhat Systems Science is Delivering to the Sectors A database and evaluation of existing labels based on back-end data How Systems Science Benefits SMRSInforms the inclusion of existing labels Delivery, Benefits, and Opportunity Working Group Contact: • Jay Golden • Jay.Golden@duke.edu

  17. Assurance Mission: The Assurance Initiative was created to develop recommendations and sector relationships to support verification of SMRS processes and outcomes. Developing for Verification Purposes

  18. Update & Delivery • What Assurance is Doing • Surveying the standards landscape across thesector groups • Reviewing the SMRS prototypes forverification issues &/or checkpoints • Formulating approaches to embed verificationknowledge into the sector working groups • What Assurance is Delivering to the Sectors • A verifiable standardized process for developingstandards (SMRS) • Recommendations for embeddingvalidation criteria into baseline models • A validation & verification methodology for SMRS Working Group Contact: • Rebecca Miles • RMiles@walton.uark.edu

  19. IT Standards & Tools Mission: The IT Standards and Tools Initiative was created to develop recommendations and strategic relationships to support IP policy, information transfer and data hubs, and software solutions. Enhancing Capability to Share Information

  20. Overview Working Group Contact: • Mike Faupel • mfaupel@walton.uark.edu Co-chairs are Jim Sullivan (SAP), Jeffrey Rice (Wal-Mart) and CristianBarcan (BASF) IP Policy and Software Provider Certification Process Development of an IP policy to support the sharing of information outlined in Sustainability Measurement and Reporting Standards and a certification process for software providers. ‘IT Ready’ SMRS Development of a structure that will house the meta-data and data in the SMRS to be implemented in software solutions to support piloting of SMRS prototypes
