Hungary: a promising decade for wind energy or standstill? – 2020, progress made and road ahead. Jacopo MocciaHead of Policy Analysis European Wind Energy Association 5 July 2011
Presentation outline • About EWEA • Wind Energy growth • Wind Energy in the EU • EU electricity mix • National Renewable Energy Action Plans • Some conclusions Hungary
What is the European Wind Energy Association? EWEA is the voice of the wind industry in Europe Activities include: • Researching the latest developments in the wind sector • Coordinating EC-funded projects • Disseminating high quality, up-to-date information • Raising awareness of the benefits of wind power • Organising Europe’s premier wind energy events
More than 600 membersfromalmost 60 countries • Manufacturers with a leading share of the global wind power market • Component suppliers • Research institutes • National wind and renewable associations • Developers • Electricity providers • Finance and insurance companies • Consultants • Contractors This combinedstrengthmakes EWEA the world’slargest and powerfulwindenergynetwork www.ewea.org/membership
Wind energy growth Global annual wind energy installations
Wind energy in the EU – 1/2 Global cumulative wind energy installations (1991 – 2010) / global cumulative nuclear installations (1961 – 1980)
Wind energy in the EU – 2/2 Power production from new wind installations and new nuclear installations
EU electricity mix 1/4 Cumulative installed capacity (MW) in 2000 – Total 575,500 MW Cumulative installed capacity (MW) in 2010 – Total 877,900 MW
EU electricity mix 2/4 Wind energy share in total electricity consumption
EU electricity mix 3/4 New power generating capacity in EU 42% RES 58% RES 63% RES
EU electricity mix 4/4 Net increase/decrease in installed capacity in the EU 2000 to 2010
National Renewable Energy Action Plans 1/3 Share of RES in electricity - NREAPs
National Renewable Energy Action Plans 2/3 Wind energy production in NREAPs 213.4 GW 84.9 GW
National Renewable Energy Action Plans 3/3 Wind energy production in EWEA scenario 230 GW 84.3 GW
Some conclusions Hungary EWEA 2020 target: 900 / 1,200 MW NREAP 2020 target: 750 MW NREAP 2010 target: 330 MW Real 2010 installations: 295 MW Lost investments: €42,000,000 in 2010 Challenges: un-ambitious targets – unclear legislation – tenders for grid connections – unstable support mechanism. Situation: standstill
