Video Analysis • The denotation of this clip is Meg’s sickness. • Signifier is the soup and mumps • The mumps signify that Meg is sick. • The Soup signifies the stereo-typical parent . • We think the soup is there to help Meg, but it does the opposite. • Dissimulation occurs as Peter abuses his Dominant position in the relationship with Meg.

  4. Analysis • The stereotypical parent should want to nurture the child back to health. • We see peter conforming to the stereotypical parent but changes quickly. • The TV programme Meg is watching signifies the idea of her feeling unloved.

Childhood The possible effects of bad parenting: • The child is left feeling uncared for and worthless, like Meg is treated in the video • The child may act out to get attention • Studies show that children who are not nurtured are more likely to drop out of school, engage in criminal activities or end up with addiction issues • “Children learn what they live” is a popular statement for a reason

  6. Children’s Needs Children’s needs are a combination of six main things: • Time • Affection • Attention • Direction • Guidance • Discipline

Giving time to the child will give them the message that they deserve the time and they feel loved Attention includes listening and taking the child seriously, showing genuine concern – this shows the child their worth or value Children need affection such as kisses, hugs and words of encouragement to show them that they are doing right by their parents Direction and guidance show the child what they must do and how they should do it- this shows them what is acceptable in society and what isn’t and they get a sense of competence Discipline builds the child’s character by showing the child consequences of actions – good or bad

Article“Getting parents off the naughty step”(The Irish Times, 2012) • A good father clothe, fed and put a roof over his children and wife • The mother did the house keeping, washed, ironed and mended • Any problems the child has the mother is blamed • There was little understanding of the child's emotions • Any difficulties and the child was a ‘problem child’ • The family as a unit was clear • Community was a big part of life

Parenting Overload! • An excessive amount of information is giving parents less confidence • The intimidation from nannies/child minders • Afraid of using the wrong ways in case they lower their child self esteem or just upset them • They loose sight of being loving and implementing rules • Working together as a couple is lost sight of

  10. At the end of it all children need rules Along with those rules they need time from their parents, support, set boundaries and be firm but fair

Referendum • In relation to the clip, The children's referendum ties in with it as it is trying to put a further recognition on the rights of children including the safety and welfare of them. • Making sure that children have a voice, the referendum sets out to make sure that this is a priority, but in Megs case she doesn’t. • Having a sick child at home should mean that they get loving and comforting care but Meg is like the runt of the family and doesn’t get this. • The referendum is trying to stop abuse against children in homes, just like what Meg is getting in her own home.

The Referendums main goals are: • Protecting children • Supporting families • Removing inequalities in adoption • Recognising children in their own right • Children should feel loved and safe within their home and family and know that home is a place they can call safe. • These are a lot of the issues that the Referendum deals with. • In relation to Meg circumstances, she is being disrespected and has food thrown in her face by her own father, which is definitely abuse against children.
