Survey Questionnaires Lynn W. Zimmerman, PhD
Developing a Good Survey Questionnaire • Planning • Identify the objectives for your research • List the information that you are trying to find out. • Format • Keep it short while ensuring that you capture all of the information that you need • Clearly state what your purpose is for doing the research. • Give clear instructions on the survey questionnaire • If a question doesn’t given necessary information, delete it.
Two Types of Questions • Structured or fixed response question • Non-structured or open question
Structured (fixed response) Question • Offers a closed set of responses • Which subject do you enjoy the most at school?( ) Math( ) Science( ) Albanian( ) Foreign Language( ) History( ) Government( ) Art/Music( ) Other
Analyze This Question • How many hours a day do you spend doing homework? ( ) 0 to 1 hour ( ) 120 to 180 minutes ( ) 4 to 5 hours ( ) more than 5 hours
Likert Scale Responses • My teacher gives clear instructions. • 1= never • 2=sometimes • 3=always
Non-structured (open-ended) Question • No list of answer choices from which to choose. Respondents write their response to a question. • What do you like to do the best in English class?
Partially Structured Question • What do you like to do the best in English class? (please select all that apply)? • Grammar drills • Vocabulary drills • Pronunciation drills • Grammar games • Fill-in-the blank worksheets • Dialogs • Role plays • Other
Ranking Questions • Asks respondents to give their opinion about the importance of certain elements • Look at this list of assessment types. Rank from 1-5. Which do you think is the most effective (1) for assessing vocabulary? Which is the least effective (5) for assessing vocabulary? • Multiple choice • Writing sentences • Writing a paragraph • True/False • Gapfill
Writing Questions - Simplicity • Language should be simple and direct. • If you could not take a certain type of test, which kind would you not take? • Which type of test do you prefer? • Always ask about just one idea at a time. • How organized and interesting was the teacher’s explanation? • How organized was the teacher’s explanation? • How interesting was the teacher’s explanation?
Writing Questions - Avoid bias • Do not write the question so that it influences the respondent’s answer. • Your teacher is one of the best teachers in our school. What do you think about her? • Rank your teacher based on these criteria (1=does not do well–5=does very well): • Organization • Explanations of grammar • Instructions for activities
Writing Questions – Clarity • Ask questions that can be answered by your subjects • How much time did you spend on English homework last month?( ) 0-1 hour( ) 2-4 hours( ) 5-7 hours( ) 8 or more hours • How much time do you estimate you spent on English homework last month?( ) 0-1 hour( ) 2-4 hours( ) 5-7 hours( ) 8 or more hours
Writing Questions - Format • Order/group questions according to subject • Present the questions in a clean and organized layout • Finally • Test the survey questionnaire
Your Turn • Write 5 survey questions for the topic your group is assigned. • You will write questions for 6-8th grade students or teachers – read carefully! • 1 question with a closed set of responses • 1 question with a Likert Scale • 1 non-structured (open-ended) • 1 partially-structured • 1 question which asks for ranking
