Honkalampi-center school Is a special school for the most severe mentally handicapped students (MSMI). Pre-school begins at the age of 6, but it is possible to start pre-school at the age of 5, if parents want it. All students have 11 years of compulsory schooling. It includes: 2 pre-school years 6 primary school years 3 lower secondary school years Municipalities can organise one more year, if wanting

The students The other 37 % include students with • Charge syndrome • Iosco syndrome • Spielmayer-Sjögren syndrome • INCL, infantile neuronal cerotic lipofuscinosis • Tuberoses sclerosis • Down syndrome • Chromosome anomalies • Damage during pregnancy

Student provenance The students come to our school all over the North Karelia. In fact, they come from 9 municipalities Polvijärvi Kontiolahti Outokumpu Eno Joensuu Kiihtelysvaara Liperi Pyhäselkä Värtsilä
Curriculum The national board of education decides on the objectives and core contents of instruction by confirming the core curriculum. Our own local education curriculum is based on these. The most severe mentally handicapped students have the curriculum with five function areas which are • Motor skills • Social skills • Cognitive skills • Language and communication • Daily living skills The functional level is sensomotoric level for most of the students (by Piaget Theory).

Individual education plan An individual education plan including educational and supporting arrangements is made for every student, transferred or taken to into special needs education. This plan is set with multi-professional group together with parents and the students, including • short term and long term goals • contents • assistance • rehabilitation • other supporting services and student assessment
The Staff The staff is mostly permanent. Some of the class assistant´s and special education teacher´s position are held at stated intervals. • Staff includes; • 1 headmistress • 4 special education teachers, one of them teach students in rehabilitation intervals • 14 class assistants and caretakers • 1 minor staff
Collaboration Possibilities to do collaboration work with • Language therapists • Occupational therapists • Physiotherapists • Music therapists • Medical doctors • Dentist • Instructors of different kind of arts • Psychologist • And mainly with parents!
Basic education The objective of basic education is to support student´s growth towards humanity and ethically responsible membership of society, and to provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary in life. The instruction shall promote equally in society and the student´s abilities to participate in education and to otherwise develop themselves during their lives Basic Education Act 628/1998
Inclusion The education of school is based on Basic Education Act 628/1998. Ecological socialization theory gives a good way to do this work. Inclusion to society in an individual level is everyone´s right. The diamand tree is painted by our students with students of another school
